Banff-Kananaskis Green Party 03.04.2021

Happy #internationalwomensday2021!! Today the Green Party of Alberta stands in solidarity with women and girls around the world to call out gender bias and ineq...uality. Women are still very under represented in politics in this province. Only 26 out of 87 of our elected MLAs are women. We #ChooseToChallenge Albertans to elect more women into leadership roles. We want to recognize and honour the hard work of women in leadership roles within the Green Party of Alberta. Thank you to our Shadow Cabinet members: Heather Morigeau (she/they/we) for Mental Health and Addictions Nimo Omar (she/her) for Education Evelyn Tanaka (she/her), Deputy Leader and Culture, Multiculturalism, and Status of Women Thank you to all the women on our Executive Council, our many committees, and our dedicated volunteers. We also recognize the hard work and vision of other women who paved the way for us to be here today. Heather has these words of wisdom to share: "Do not underestimate the things I will do" Rolling in the Deep by Adele "In every space where a womxn rules the entire community thrives. She may be a homemaker, an entrepreneur, an artist, or a politician. A womxn supported in a position of leadership ensures everyone around her is rewarded in kind, more so if she has endured oppression or marginalization. Being a mixed-Metis Two Spirit, I honour and celebrate the feminine spirit in me which is called into leadership, as my Mother, Grandmothers and Aunties before me have done in memorable and measurable ways. I seek to make them proud, and to one day become an ancestor who improved life on Mother Earth for the next Seven Generations." Heather Morigeau (she/they/we) Evelyn wants to encourage other women and marginalized folks to become politically active and to speak your truth to the world: "Prior to 2019 it never occurred to me that I could participate in politics beyond being a voter. Thanks to my friend Allie Tulick who ran as a candidate for the Green Party of Alberta I learned that anyone can step up for their community and for the issues they care about. My priorities being the Deputy Leader of the GPA are to represent myself as authentically as possible, to lead by example, to uphold the 6 Green principles to the best of my ability, and to empower a new generation of youth leaders particularly racialized and BIPOC women, trans men and women, and non-binary folks. To all marginalized people and Greens across Alberta who have been unrepresented for decades please know that the Green Party of Alberta is here for you. It's our time."

Alberta's democratic institutions operate under a Westminster parliamentary framework. Green Party of Alberta Democratic Reform Critic, Chris Alders, delivered a workshop on the subject of Shadow Cabinets, known as 'governments in waiting,' recently. www.greenpartyofalberta.ca

Jordan Wilkie has been Leader of the Green Party of Alberta for 10 months and along with his Deputy Leader Evelyn Tanaka they have been organizing, building com...mittee capacity, empowering volunteers, communicating the Green Vision, and collaborating with Greens across the country. Of course they couldn't do this without the dedicated members of the Executive Council, our hard-working committees, and all GPA members. If you like what you see please consider joining the party, renewing your membership, or chipping in a donation! Jordan and Evelyn want your suggestions for 2021. Do you want more professional development webinars, a speaker series with famous Greens, candidate training sessions, open committee meetings, or casual online social events with the leadership team? Please drop suggestions in the comments. Thank you!!

The UCP are morally bankrupt, and they’re financially bankrupting our communities because of it. 2023 can’t come soon enough.

Taking a well-deserved breather! Greens turned out in big numbers to the recent PermaBlitz event in St. Albert to help build a fruit farm. Among them were Chris Valley (left), Green Party of Alberta Energy Critic and Candidate of Record for Edmonton-Manning and a friend. New Realites. New Opportunities. New Team. www.greenpartyofalberta.ca

Banff-Kananaskis Greens stand in solidarity with our neighbours in Airdrie. We are stronger when united in love than when divided in hate.

Rural Albertans make up a vital part of the fabric of our province and many of their municipalities are dissipating because the UCP have refrained from forcing oil and gas companies to pay their fair share of taxes.
