There are moments in my life that changed everything. 1) Sitting in a movie theatre with my cousin, when we were pee-adolescents and my cousin’s grandmother could not hope to benefit (if there was any benefit) from being recognized as a native. The Indians were being gunned down by the cowboys. This was when I was wearing a Hop-along Cassidy sweat shirt and showing my grandfather’s calves at the agricultural exhibition. 2) When I was an adolescent and bicycling from tow...n to my rural village, opposite the airport I saw smoke rising from the area of the smallest homes I knew. At that moment, when I had begun to question everything I had been taught, I wished the bell on the handle bars of my bike was a Dick Tracy watch (today’s cellphone with internet access) so I could report what might be a house fire. I peddled on. There was no unusual activity in this swampland that was known locally as the Indian Reservation. The vehicles that passed me sped on, without hesitation. I was calmed by the realization that the drivers all knew something I needed to know. I would learn that the highway I peddled, and previously walked, was between the airport (with its World War II easement, meaning single story buildings only) and the town dump that was fired up as an ecological solution to the ever-increasing volume of consumer society’s capitalist lies. Please listen to this courageous and morally correct woman for her common sense narrative of history, as she experiences it and as we should know it by now. Unless the government of Canada leaps into responsible and effective action, we may as well sleep though the ecocide it is advancing.
