One of the most notable and compelling shifts in eLearning that we've observed over the last year is what Dr. Ross has coined the "YouTubization of eLearning." His in-depth article on this subject can be found here: https://banncomms.medium.com/in-depth-the-youtubization-of-

With the demand for eLearning EXPLODING we wanted to get inside Dr. Ross' mind and pick his brain. So we did just that...and this is what he had to say: BC: When and where did you receive your PhD designation? JR: I received my PhD in Educational Technology with a focus on Adult Learning Theory and Instructional Design as each pertains to eLearning from the University of Calgary in early 2000. My dissertation compared the same course taught by a professor in the classroom v...Continue reading

Words are powerful things. And in the digital world, where posts, videos, podcasts, emails and texts have the tendency to last, paying attention to what you type and say is as important as ever. Recently, we detailed why you should eliminate the word just from your vocabulary. Today, BannComm founder Vanja Bannan explores two more words that can alter your tone for the worst: but and sorry. https://medium.com//sorry-but-two-more-words-that-can-dama

BannComm 22.08.2020

I wanted to expand on this idea of eliminating the word just from your vocabulary. We wrote an article on it, which Ill link in the comments. But in summary, using it like this can really damage your tone: I thought we could just look into reviewing the scope one more time.... Take the word out and see how it reads. Now, I certainly still use just when speaking. But in writing, if you do it a lot, the effect can be dangerous. You set a permanent tone, and that tone is one that can undermine and devalue your thoughts, asks or requests. Keep that tone long enough, and it can damage your mindset. Damage your mindset, and your ambition can suffer. Ladies and gentlemen, I would love to know your thoughts.

"Thank you very much to Women of Influence for giving me the space and opportunity to tell my story. It's been quite the journey." Vanja Bannan, Founder, BannComm

BannComm 02.08.2020

Founder of BannComm, Vanja Bannan is working on a special feature with Women of Influence - here is an excerpt from her upcoming interview #meetarolemodel My proudest accomplishment is Going from ESL to LSE! The mirrored acronyms are a coincidence: English as a Second Language and The London School of Economicsbut they are a constant reminder for me. I came to Canada with limited English skills, something that puts many immigrants at an immediate disadvantage. But through ...hard work and resilience, the situation can absolutely be flipped 180 degrees! Fluent in English, I graduated from LSE with an MSc (Masters of Science) in Communications in 2007. The effort made to get through my academic career was as much for myself as it was for my family: a way to say thank you to my parents for all their sacrifices, to show them that it was absolutely for something. That is what I am most proud of. #interview

Change is a constant, driving force. Whether it sweeps in like a storm or evolves slowly over time, change defines everything around us. For Bannan Communications, its a happy medium: after six years in the field were officially growing the teamand shortening the name. BannComm is here, with a reimagined site and a new, comprehensive suite of services. https://banncomm.com... --- Bannan Communications was founded with change in mind. Vanja Bannan wanted a career and a calling that never stayed put, that had to stay current to stay alive, that had no choice but to embrace change. In 2014, it started as a two person outfit with a singular focus: digital. The field of communications has been in a state of constant disruption ever since technology in general began accelerating (printing press, anybody?) But digital tech threw gasoline on an already healthy fire. In a few short decades, the human race became more connected and intertwined than in all of our collective history. Between 2014 and 2019, Vanja and her business partner Rick McLaughlin worked with several diverse clients who faced the challenge of these digital changes. Throughout it all, Vanja juggled the dual responsibilities of client management and starting a young family. Setbacks and sacrifices were common and in some cases heartbreaking, but the work remained top tier. They built a bespoke eCommerce platform for a major international retailer. Revamped entire websites, and built more than a few from scratch. They managed social media, display ad and email campaigns. Digital contests, search engine optimization, podcast consulting client needs were wide ranging, ambitious, and urgent. Change was the only constant. And after more than five intense years of learning, discovery, experimentation and tireless execution, Bannans next step is here. We are now BannComma modern communications consulting partner, specializing in highly creative digital marketing solutions for clients on the leading edge of their fields in science, technology and culture. The core team has expanded, along with the addition of a support team from all around the world. In the early days of 2020, the future may seem daunting and uncertain. While we may not know what the next five years may bring, BannComm will bank on change. And change is nothing if not exciting.

The new BANNCOMM logo has been designed to evoke a sense of classic modernism, combining 20th century geometric type with a contemporary aesthetic. Special care has been given to character weight, rendering an ideal balance between aesthetics of strength and refinement. The resulting wordmark is immutably current and relevant in the face of ephemeral design trends, and will remain a strong brand signifier for years to come. #comingsoon #digitalagency #rebrand

Things are getting smarter, and our buildings are no exception. The cities of the future will be more digitally connected than ever before. As networking and computing technology continue to improve and get cheaper, we can expect the idea of the smart home to expand to entire communities. Energy reduction will be the chief priorityenvironmental analysis systems combined with new, data driven design technologies will help coordinate and distribute the use of heating and cooli...ng throughout larger buildings. Shared water cycling could help create green spaces on every balcony. Community data sharing is another big idea, one that will certainly clash with privacy and security concerns. In theory, using anonymous data collected by homes and common areas in buildings could improve community safety, transportation, delivery and commute efficiency, and more. Here in Toronto, Sidewalk Labs is pioneering many of these green-tech and digital-community ideas with their ambitious waterfront project. Set to be approved later in 2020, their vision could be the first step into a totally new concept of urban living. Learn more here: https://www.sidewalktoronto.ca/

Humans have loved games since time immemorial. From chess to team sports, we crave situations where there are defined boundaries, clear rules, lots of interaction, and someone or something to root for. Digital technology accelerates all human endeavours, and our fascination with gaming is no exception. Physical sports have enjoyed wider audiences, deeper statistical analyses, and neat on screen aids but the real juggernaut in digitally enhanced gaming is the world of video g...ames. The size of 2020s gaming industry is staggering, and the stats show that accessibility and inclusivity are on the rise. Gender participation is nearly equal, especially when it comes to mobile gaming. eSports are organized, professional leagues of the worlds best gamers, competing for serious money, and entertaining massive audiences. The athletes may not be the type were used to seeing on television, but all indications suggest that thats about to change soon. Heres some perspective: the worlds top game streamer (alias: Ninja) makes an estimated $6 million a yearthe average NBA and NHL salary is in the 2-3 million dollar range. Thoughts on living in interesting times: Every day that goes by, the world gets a little more digital. More connections are made, more sites go up, someoneyoung and oldtouches a smartphone for the first time. Largely thanks to this connectivity, the global response to a major health crisis has been immense. It feels that way at least! We know that this thing is only going to accelerate the already breakneck pace of digital, and the reliance on digital communications. Repor...ts from only a week ago cite figures like 22X increases in video conference tech (linked below). The business world has responded fast, and the private individuals who make up the cores of businesses, boards and decision making bodies are responding too. It'll continue, as social isolation deepens into status-quo. So in the spirit of being forward thinking and looking to a future when we are past this troubled terrain, we encourage you to seriously consider the role that your digital communications platforms will play in the next 4 weeks, 4 months, and 4 years. Websites stand in for when you can't be face to face. Drip email, chatbot and SMS systems can boost a resource strapped sales team. Project management tools and process automation can sharpen efficiencies when you need them the most. Opportunity lurks everywhere, even in darker times. Theres an unsolved mystery surrounding Androids tasty codenames. Today, the mobile operating system known as Android powers over two and a half billion devices. It started life in 2003, originally intended to be a brain for digital cameras. Google bought it in 2005 at or around the time the decision was made to switch to mobile phones. In 2008, Android version 1.5 was ready for the market, and they called it Cupcake. For the next ten years, the various releases from version... 1.6 all the way through to version 9.0 would be named after treats, and giant, colourful statues were created in their honour at Googles HQ. In order, the names are: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow, Nougat, Oreo, and Pie. Youll notice that theyre quite alphabetical as well. But why? Just for fun? The dev team at Android kept famously quiet about the sweet names, adding more charm and mystique to cast of tasty characters. In 2013, a Google spokesperson offered this explanation: "Since these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version is named after a dessert." Sounds lovely, but we dont really buy it. Being marketers ourselves, this has a reverse engineered PR spin written all over it. Its too convenient, and the naming convention started long before Android was a titan in the industry. Then again, maybe were just suckers for a good mystery.

Could a phone charger fly us to the moon? Computers have come a long way. Nowadays, you'll sometimes hear someone marvel about how the stuff inside our smartphones is more powerful than the machines that guided Apollo 11 to the moon in 1969. In 2020, we've progressed far enough that it now might be possible to say the same thing about our phone chargers! Fancy device chargers have small computers inside of them. They help regulate the flow of electricity into whatever is atta...ched to them. A curious engineer drilled down on this subject, comparing the nitty gritty details of the Apollo 11 computers to the small CPU inside a popular high end charger. We will link the full and fascinating piece below, but here are the highlights: the phone charger's computer was more than 500 times faster than Apollo 11's. It could also store almost twice as much information, and has twice the RAM. Since Apollo 11 used four separate computers of similar strength, it is in theory possible to guide a moon landing mission using maybe two or three phone charger CPUs. Rocket boosters not included. Not every digital campaign is purely online. Many digital executions work best with traditional elements. Take for example a national contest we developed for Maple Leaf Foods & Dempsters. The UPC code was required as part of the entry, along with interacting tips from the brand that promoted a healthy lifestyle. Our goals with developing Design by Destas logo were twofold: bold & simple for easy web display, with plenty of room for creative application. This harmony was achieved by the liberal use of negative space for the lettering. On any plain background, the logo is visible and impactful. But colourful, complex and zany backdrops can also be usedeither in full or only to fill in some or all of the letters. This gives Desta the flexibility to subtly adjust her brand positioning... depending on the situation. One creative application she opted for were business cards with varying designs.
