It’s disgusting the number of hate crimes on the rise against the Asian population. More so in the states, but also here in Canada. Please stop calling the Coro...na virus anything other than Covid-19 or Corona. I won’t even use the terms that it has been referred to. Please correct others when they use derogatory terms to describe this virus and also those who blame a particular race for it. See more

NDP proposes mental health emergency teams: Too many people are falling through the cracks when it comes to mental health, and our emergency response system is... not properly equipped to deal with mental health crises, said Gary Burrill. https://www.thechronicleherald.ca//opposition-leaders-say/

Here is Father Maroun's letter to the editor published today in the Cape Breton Post. The message is clear, and the NSEF will not stop digging until we expose ...what this provincial government is guilty of. When a provincial election is called, we will be asking the public to assist us with protests on those MLA's who continue to ignore the equalization issue. It is time to remind them who they work for and to send the message that we will not be ignored any further. Here is Father Maroun's letter: It is up to us now! I hear comments every day while moving around Sydney about the work that I do with the Nova Scotians for Equalization Fairness. People thank me, hug me, and ask what they can do to help. I am 90 years old and have been working on the equalization issue for more than 24 years and now it is time for the whole island to start to challenge our elected officials. You must ask yourself why the political parties and our elected officials are ignoring the NSEF and the equalization issue. The simple answer is we have done our homework and we know what we are talking about and the politicians simply cannot defend their actions or refute the facts. To sit across the table with our group, they simply cannot provide reasons for their parties misappropriation of funding that is sent from Ottawa each year to help us. We do not have the right to complain about the high poverty levels, the high unemployment rates, the outrageous taxes, the young people leaving and so many seniors living on their own without support from family, if we do not all try to do something to fix it. Why do we elect the same politicians year after year and never confront them about our situation on Cape Breton island? If we continue to allow political parties to use us to generate 1/5 of the provincial budget with equalization, then we will never grow or prosper. Why have we allowed this to continue for over three decades without challenging those who are paid to represent us? The harder that the Nova Scotians for Equalization Fairness push our politicians for answers the more they ignore us. They can not ignore us all and it is time the public stand up and be heard. If Cape Breton is to grow and flourish, we must start to ask the tough questions like why the CBRM budget amount (2019-2020) is $151 million with $111 million collected in taxes and the HRM budget is $955 million with just over $493 million collected in residential and commercial taxes. We are one quarter of the size so why do they collect 51% of their budget from taxes and the CBRM taxation portion is 73.4%. Where is the difference coming from and why is it that just HRM is benefiting? Keep in mind that we only use the government’s own data. Why do we continue to vote in politicians who are dictated to by party leaders to ignore the people who are asking the tough questions? If we want to heal and start to reverse the damage caused by the games the political parties are continuing to play, then we all better start to ask some serious questions of the people looking for your votes. At 90 years old now, I will continue to ask the questions and when an election is called, I will stand up and remind the voting public who is ignoring the constituents and who is not. I hope you will stand up with me and remember this, the MLA’s and MP’s are elected to represent us and not a party or a party leader. We elect them and we pay them, and they obviously need to be reminded of this. Regards, Rev. Dr. Albert Maroun & The NSEF

In response to the remark Chris Abbass made in regards to International Students. There is a little word inside of the word Community. It is small but has a big connotation and that word is Unity. I personally want the CBRM to be a more unified and supportive community for all who live here. As is quite evident, our community is now comprised of many International students. The students bring diversity and culture to the CBRM. Their presence has helped to grow our economy and it would be great to see some of these students become permanent residents, open businesses and continue to help grow our economy and our diversity. There is room for all who want to live here and I believe I speak for many, when I say we welcome you and hope you put down roots here. You are all important to the CBRM.

Tomorrow is my first volunteer day with Meals on Wheels. I am also a volunteer with the Good Food Bus. I challenge others to get involved, by volunteering even ...an hour a week, to something that you would like to do, or something that is near and dear to your heart. I think most of us can find at least an hour or encourage your teenager to get involved with something. These organizations wouldn’t survive, or be able to help the community without volunteers. Please consider becoming one. I have given countless hours to the SPCA. They can always use people to either socialize the cats or walk the dogs. Most times the poor kitties are stuck in a cage all day. If that isn’t your interest, than there are many more organizations out there that could use volunteers. Not only will you be doing something good for others but you will feel good about yourself as well. See more

Please consider giving to the Whitney Pier Food Bank to help those in need. Doesn’t matter what District you are from you can still purchase food for this cause. It is servicing the Whitney Pier residents. Contact Natasha Howell. I met Natasha yesterday and she is doing great things for her community.

I have heard others say, you don’t want to just vote for someone because they are nice and they say they will call you back. I for one, am more than that. I am determined, intelligent, willing to work hard on behalf of the Community, eager to learn more to help the residents in the District and the Municipality as a whole. And yes, I am nice and I will call you back. It’s important to be personable and lend an empathetic ear and give people the courtesy of a reply. Also, I don’t pretend to be a Political scholar but someone who is highly interested in Politics. More importantly though, I am interested in helping people and the Community, for the betterment of the Community.

My Interview as a Candidate for District 6.

Barbara Beaton for Cape Breton East 21.06.2020

Last night I spent almost 2 hours on the phone with a nice gentleman from the NS Equalization Fairness group, trying to get myself more versed on Equalization. I am doing my homework so that I will be the Councillor you need me to be, (should I be elected for District 6) which is well educated on the issues affecting our community. Also, I only have 4 more streets left to walk and drop off my platform cards. They will be done this week. Finally, I will get a rest. Truly, I ha...ve been working hard and putting in the time for this campaign. I am a one woman show (with a little help from my husband when he can). I will put the same time and determination in, if you will elect me as Councillor. I give a 110% in everything I do. Please consider a VOTE FOR ME. Also, to the ladies who mentioned the need for stop signs for a particular area, I will be calling tomorrow to try and get some answers on that. See more

I am proud to say that I am almost finished delivering my platform cards around the District. I have worked hard beating the streets by myself and sometimes wit...h the help of my husband. I have a few more streets to go. I have been working tirelessly on my Campaign, walking, talking, researching, etc., all while working at my day job, that is insanely busy right now, due to Covid. I chose to do this on my own because I think it is more personal than getting others to do the hard work for me. It proves that I am determined and willing to put in the work and time to win this. I have had the chance to chat with many great residents in the area and it is nice to make that face to face (socially distancing) connection. Today though, I met a resident who, as soon as I opened my mouth to say I was running, he cut me off and said you don’t have a chance in hell against, a certain running mate, whose father was in council. Well that ticked me off, but in a good way, because he put the under me. I said, hear me out. I told him that all of us, who are running in this district, are on the same playing field and just because someone had a family member in council doesn’t mean that a person is going to be elected because they have the same last name. (No offence against this running mate whatsoever and I won’t play dirty politics against any of my running mates, as they have just as much a right to run as do I, but I had to state the obvious, that we are all new and have just as good a chance as the next person, and I wish all my fellow candidates well, even though I want to win this). I also told this man not to count me out and that I am a very determined, hardworking, reliable person who is passionate about the community and the people in it. We have to stop with the archaic thinking. Oh and of course, I also had the, you are awful young to be running. I am 52 and the oldest one running in the district. See more

Hey everyone, I am running for Councillor in District 6, in this year’s Municipal election, being held in October. For those of you who don’t know me, I have been in the healthcare field for the past 17 years, as a certified Medical Laboratory Asst.,(graduated from Mohawk College) working at the Regional for 13 years, in many areas of the Lab and Blood Collections, and also as a Phlebotomist at the Eskasoni Health Centre, where I was employed for 9 years, and the Membertou We...llness Home. Five years ago I started my own Independent Phlebotomy business, (mobile blood collections), going to homes in the community and also long term care facilities, to collect blood requested by Physicians, for their patients. I graduated from Cape Breton University in 1991 with Business. Prior to a career in healthcare, I worked in several different fields such as: CBU(Accounting and Student Services Departments), Office Administration at a few different businesses, several retail stores such as, Manager at Suzy Shier and supervisor at Zellers Department Store (14 years). I was also a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer. I am a singer/songwriter and I have recorded several songs, two of which have received airplay as far away as Australia, and here at home with the Coast Radio station, who have been very supportive. I have been in several theatre productions and also three television shows. My volunteerism includes, countless hours socializing cats and walking dogs at the SPCA, as well as fundraising and pet donation food drives. I held pet donation food drives and fundraising for Home is Where the Heart is Cat Rescue. I was on the board of the local chapter of the ALS society for a couple years and have participated and fundraised for many ALS walk-a-thons. I fundraised, organized and participated (for several years) in the Moon Walk for Cystic Fibrosis. I also volunteered my time with People First (people with developmental disabilities) and Young Offenders and helped set up and work at the Eskasoni’s first We Day event. Come the end of September, I will be volunteering my time for Meals on Wheels. I am almost 52, married, have 2 adult stepsons and 2 cats. I have been interested in Politics since grade 12 when I signed up for a Modern World Problems course (for the most part, it was a fairly Political course). It was my favourite, taught by the best teacher, Mr. Greg O’Keefe. But more importantly than all of this, is that I want to work collaboratively with council to address the needs, concerns, issues and problems of the residents in our Community for the betterment of our Community as a whole. I hope to have your support. Elect me, Barbara Beaton. See more

I signed up as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels starting the end of Sept. I want to give back to the community, especially the elderly who supported me, by using my services (Beaton’s Blood Collections). If you have time to give, think about becoming a volunteer.

Hey everyone. I have been walking around District 6 now for weeks dropping off my bio/platform cards in mailboxes. We are advised against knocking on doors so that is why I haven’t been doing that. I do however chat to those who are out around in the district. I am reiterating this yet again because I repeat I AM NOT KNOCKING ON DOORS. The residents of District 6 can attest to that as they receive my cards in their mailboxes. It was mentioned today to me, as someone assumed that is what I am doing and no, I follow rules. I am in healthcare and know the importance of that.
