Barefoot Osteopathy 04.11.2020

I love this article! So many things I say on a daily basis such as 'if you don't move it you lose it' and we should all be squatting to go to the toilet and sitting cross legged on the floor. And since it's in an article, it must be true......... https://getpocket.com//the-forgotten-art-of-squatting-is-a

A little Barefoot update.. a little late. Firstly I apologise that I have not put an update up earlier, I kept being hopeful that things would settle down and there would be nothing to say. That of course has not happened, Barefoot has been closed now for nearly 2 weeks and we will remain closed for the time being. We are following the regulations of Health Canada and will continue to do so until osteopathy is deemed an essential service or the social distancing rules can l...essen. For those of you with upcoming appointments, we are cancelling week by week, and you will get an email from your practitioner about your appointment. If you do get a reminder email for an appointment that has been cancelled, please ignore it, maintaining your appointment in our system will let us keep track of who we need to reschedule once we can open again. We hope you are remaining healthy and active during these crazy times. Stay safe and sane.

Sadly James Latham is going to be leaving us at the end of March to return to Australia so now is a great time to get in to see him before he goes. This also means we have space for another Osteopathic Practitioner. All interested parties email [email protected]

Happy Thanksgiving! This is a time of year I find very challenging, the days are getting very short, the mornings are dark, it's cold.. but not that cold, i'm always under or over dressed. It's pouring with rain when I want to do outside activities, and sunny and lovely when i'm at work. Summer seems a very distant memory. So it's good timing for a little focus on what I have to be thankful for, which really is so much. Life is better when you share it, and so much better... when you share it with the best of people! I am so lucky to work with so many great people, from all those who come through Barefoot as patients to my fabulous fellow practitioners, who bring their energy, skills, love of what they do and sometimes their smart ass sarcastic humour and make it so enjoyable to share a space with them, Thank you! And stunning sunrises that you don't have to get up at 4am to see, I am also thankful for those See more

Welcome to James Latham who is joining the Barefoot team in June. He is fresh of the boat from Australia where he was working In Sydney before moving to Canada to have another summer before he gets to explore the mountains.

You’re never too young (or too old) to find your inner osteopath.

Everyone experiences immensely stressful periods at times. C’est la vie! And while it’s easy to think of stress as the enemy (I’m certainly guilty of demonising it at times), in this video Kelly McGonigal challenges this perception. She argues that it’s our beliefs about stress which determines the effect it has on our health. One of the core tenets of osteopathy is that ‘the body is a unit’. This means osteopathic practitioners are taught to consider the person as a whole. W...e see the impacts of stress on our patients’ lives every day. It’s well documented that stress CAN be a potent prognostic factor (something associated with a poor outcome). However, this video suggests we have more control over this than previously thought. I’m going to take heed of Kelly’s message and I hope that you will get a chance to watch this video and have a healthier attitude towards your stress too. https://www.ted.com//kelly_mcgonigal_how_to_make_stress_yo

I often joke to my patients that I spend nearly as much time explaining what osteopathy is as I do practicing it. This is probably because osteopathy is not based on any particular set of techniques, but rather a philosophy underpinned by the following four principles: 1. The body is a unit (mind-body connection) 2. Structure and function are interrelated 3. The body has its own self-healing and self-regulatory mechanisms... 4. Treatment is based on the above 3 principles As such osteopathic practitioners employ a wide range of approaches to influence the skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissue and internal organs. Manual therapy techniques commonly employed by osteopathic practitioners include osteopathic manipulation, stretching, mobilisation, massage, cranial osteopathy, and visceral manipulation (depending on the individual practitioner). This is a very rudimentary description of osteopathy so please feel welcome to email me any further questions you may have, or simply book in for a treatment and try it for yourself! As we enter the final days of summer, it’s more important than ever to get outdoors and make the most of this weather while it lasts! Many of you will have been too busy with your kids to attend to your own aches and pains in recent times. Luckily, an appointment with your osteo is only a few clicks away, and with two new osteos starting at Barefoot in the last couple of weeks, we now have more availability than ever! Hi folks, I thought I’d take this opportunity to quickly introduce myself (shameless plug!). My name is Jai, and like Sarah, I completed my osteopathic studies at RMIT University in Melbourne. I enjoy treating many different conditions, from headaches to plantar fasciitis, although I have a special interest in chronic low back pain (more on this in a future post). In addition to working as an osteo, I also teach part-time at Vancouver College of Massage Therapy (VCMT). I’m excited to join the Barefoot team, and I’m looking forward to meeting and hopefully treating some of you and your loved ones. In the meantime if you have any questions about osteopathy, please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected]
