Sometimes you need to ride opposite ways, but sometimes you need eachother and finding that balance is necessary to stay sane. Work for different people and outfits and learn from all kinds. Be humble and know that you can learn something from everyone, even if its something you dont want to do. Unfortunate Update - Its been a hard few weeks here and due to a nasty viral disease we made the tough decision to put down "Bugsy" our home raised 3 yr old that was going to sell at the Art of the Cowgirl Sale in January. With this, and the border restrictions we have decided to pull Straw from the sale and stay home. ... Good news We are awaiting final details, but they are re-scheduling the main event of AOC and another horse sale for June 2021 in MONTANA. We are looking forward to continuing to be apart of this event and i wont complain about riding Straw for another 5 months On more business fore front-due to this unfortunate string of events, i will be listing a few horses privately. Day 2 Halter Breaking Series This colt (despite what video clips your seeing) is actually quite sensitive, and wasnt going to let me just walk up to him and slide that rope over his head, so i took my time and tracked him around the roundpen, asking him to turn frequently and releasing the pressure when he would come towards me. He was skeptical of the rope in my hand so i started tossing it out infront and behind him. He soon learned it wasnt so scary and would handle th...e pressure of me standing near and tossing that rope on the ground insert #lorettathecorgi play time hey, he may as well get used to her now right? Now he is comfortable again with my walking up to and petting him, so i slide the rope over his neck and basically go over what we did on day 1. Adding different feels and pressures - I will continue to let the colt move freely and change the setting of the rope, letting him become comfortable with it touching him in sensitive areas. This rope work can save your horses life- if he ever gets caught up in something he stands a chance to not rip himself apart if he has been taught to feel pressure in those areas and accept it instead of flee and fight. Once im happy with how he is accepting the rope work, i put his halter on and take the rope off. Ill do alot of petting, walking to and away from him switching sides- again giving you the opportunity to let him follow the pressure of the now halter. I never pull on a foal asking him to come ahead until later on. I always work their sides, when youre in these early stages and they just arnt sure what youre wanting, you can help them by staying close to their body and putting physical pressure on their hip while asking to follow the halter. They will naturally figure out to follow your feel. If you go to pulling on one to come forward and he is not ready-i almost guarantee he is going to flee backwards trying to get away from the pressure. And if you hang onto him, hes probably going to flip over. I find after ive done all this- they WANT to follow me. Now that i feel he is comfortable in the halter again, i will add the FLAG. Another different feel to the foal and an extension of your arm. I start where are they are most comfortable-usually the neck-and continue to move around his body. When he wants to leave, thats ok let him but maintain your following the halter. Go back to his comfortable spot and continue adding more until he will let you touch him all over with that flag. Typically the legs and under belly are the most sensitive. I like to make sure they are comfortable with this before i stick myself down there-as his first trim is coming soon Stay tuned for day 3 Thanks for following! Please consider sharing! Im going to start a little series on how i go about the first "baby steps" with my foals! I value the time i spend with them as youngsters very highly and i think its such an important step that alot of people take for granted! For starters i do not handle my babies when they're on the mare, i let them grow up #ranchraised and learn to be horses, if they want to be curious when i am visiting them, thats great- i make my presence a good/comfortable thing for them. You ...have to handle them, take them to the vet to breed your mare, etc? I get it! Dont fret!! All the next steps i will post can be done at any age! But dont let that cute baby fool you, a disrespectful baby becomes a disrespectful horse and that is dangerous. Take the steps and make them good from day 1. Back to post weaning time - i let my babes settle, get on feed and no longer worrying about where mom is before i start handling them. Day 1- I use a heavy cotton rope and tie a bowline knot in it, some colts by now are gentle and curious enough they will let me slide it on, if not ill throw it on if i have too. A round pen and a rope long enough that you can be in the middle and the foal on the outside is what i find works best.. i dont want to ever "chase them" and scare them. Ill let the foal move freely and then start to ask for a yeild of pressure to the rope, every try is rewarded. Soon you fill find your foal finding the release and comfortable spot. I do this in many different ways until that foal will let me walk up to and pet on him. Every time they walk away is another opportunity to have him follow the pressure of the rope and come back to you. The goal today is to have them trusting and comfortable with the rope, and you. I try not to sneak around my foals but also i dont want to be intimidating, so i try to do everything with a purpose. Every foal is different and what may be the end of today with one will not be the same with another.
