Barque Smokehouse 07.11.2020

Hi everyone, Below are the initial steps we are taking towards addressing the systemic barriers within our industry and restaurant. This will be a long process but we are absolutely committed to making any changes necessary to ensure that Barque is a socially responsible organisation. We have partnered with an organization to provide guidance and training. They will be conducting an audit of our policies and procedures with a specific focus on addressing the issues of cultu...ral appropriation and BBQ, identifying anti-Black racism and building community partnerships. In addition, we are in the process of updating our website to include more information on our company values, policies and commitments to our staff and community. We will be building it to include details on this process and ensure transparency. Here, we will also include information on the history of BBQ and some of our favourite restaurants and recipes. Thank you.

As a company, we have started and will continue to have important conversations about anti-Black racism and what we need to do to make sure that steps are being taken towards actionable change. We recognize that there is a long history of racism and discrimination that extends beyond this moment and we cannot ignore the reality that this happens everyday in Canada. We need to be actively anti-racist and understand that this must go beyond words this needs to be done with a...ction and change. We have a responsibility to do better and educate ourselves, and to do this by listening to Black voices. We are committed to change and will follow-up with the steps we will be taking towards addressing systemic barriers within our industry and restaurant. Our goal is to act in a manner that actively works against anti-Black racism. We have not always gotten things right and will be moving forward with the values of social justice at the forefront. We acknowledge that we do not have all of the answers to what work needs to be done, but we know what values that we want to be front and centre and make a commitment to not lose sight of that. We welcome questions, feedback, and conversation. If anyone has any questions or thoughts at this time or in the future, please reach out. Black Lives Matter.
