Even as trees lose their leaves, they still bring beauty and interest to the landscape. Trees with peeling bark like paperbark and trident maple bring texture and interest to a landscape after the leaves have fallen.

This is tree fell last week during a day when heavy winds were present. It had a structural defect called a "co-dominant stem" and the wind caused it to split and come down. It is a great idea to have your Bartlett Arborist come around and check for issues such as these in your trees. We can often provide solutions to mitigate or reduce the risk of potential failure. Unfortunately, the remaining part of this tree also had to be removed as it was a safety concern. An ideal tim...e for our Arborists to inspect for structural defects is during the late fall and winter time, as there are less to no leaves on your trees and these weaknesses can be spotted. Our reps and crews work straight through all seasons of the year to ensure that your trees are happy, healthy, and safe! We look forward to seeing you and your trees soon! #codominantstem #emergencytreeservice #safetyaboveallelse #treedefects

The silver maple is the "wild child" of the maple family. It grows fast and tall (up to 30 metres or 100 feet), quickly blocks out sunlight and its water-loving roots will try to sneak into underground pipes and tanks. This before & after tidies things up with a careful pruning!

Gypsy moth caterpillars are voracious feeders and can defoliate a tree in just days when there is a heavy infestation. The best time to treat is in early spring. However, pruning of dead branches, thinning of the canopy and addressing soil nutrient deficiencies now are important practices to help trees better withstand infestation.

Have you seen any gypsy moth infestations? Have a look in your trees...

Bartlett Tree Experts 16.10.2019

Have you seen this pest? The gypsy moth is an invasive pest and a voracious feeder. A fully-grown larva can consume as much as one square foot of foliage in a day! When infestations are heavy, entire trees can be stripped of leaves in just a few days. A healthy deciduous tree can usually survive one defoliation, but it hurts the growth and strength of the tree. 2 to 3 consecutive years of heavy defoliation will result in death of most hardwoods, especially oaks. A tree weakened by losing its leaves is also susceptible to invasion by secondary organisms such as insect borers and root decay fungi, which often kill the tree. Gypsy moth populations fluctuate each year. If you suspect an infestation speak with your Bartlett Arborist about saving affected trees and minimizing the spread of gypsy moth.

During a tree assessment, a Bartlett Arborist can look for clues that tell us about that trees condition. Sometimes it would be nice to see inside the tree for a better understanding. Fortunately we have that technology. Sonic tomography can help us detect rot and other defects that might not be seen during a visual assessment. These defects may or may not affect risk associated with the tree. If you have a highly valuable tree we can give you the information that you need to make an informed management decision.
