On this day in 1965, Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics grabbed 49 rebounds, the third-highest total in NBA history, during a 112-100 victory over the Detroit Pistons. In 1957, Bill Russell himself previously grabbed 49 rebounds and a few seasons later during the 1960 NBA season, he would set the second highest NBA rebound total with 51 in 1960. During the same season in 1960, Wilt Chamberlain would set the record for most rebounds in a single game with 55. On this day in 1982, Canadian downhill ski racer Steve Podborski became the first non-European to win the World Cup season title in downhill skiing. During the same event at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympic Games, the Toronto athlete had captured the bronze medal for that event. On this day in 1985, Kevin McHale of the Boston Celtics scored on 22-of-28 field goal attempts and set a team-record, 56 points at that time in a 138-129 victory over the Detroit Pistons at Boston Garden. With 3 or 4 minutes left to go in the game, Kevin McHale requested to be subbed out. Fellow teammate and NBA Hall of Fame inductee, Larry Bird, told McHale to go for 60 and stated that his record of 56 points would be broken. Nine days later, Larry Bird eclipsed Kevin McHale...'s 56 point record and collected 60 points in a 126-115 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Kevin McHale played for the Boston Celtics for the entirety of his Hall of Fame NBA career (1980-1993). He was best known for being a huge part of the one of the greatest NBA frontcourts of all-time. This "big three" included fellow Hall of Fame inductees Larry Bird and Robert Parish; the trio would go on to win 3 NBA Championships during the 1980s (1981, 1984, 1986).
