On this day in 1985, Kevin McHale of the Boston Celtics scored on 22-of-28 field goal attempts and set a team-record, 56 points at that time in a 138-129 victory over the Detroit Pistons at Boston Garden. With 3 or 4 minutes left to go in the game, Kevin McHale requested to be subbed out. Fellow teammate and NBA Hall of Fame inductee, Larry Bird, told McHale to go for 60 and stated that his record of 56 points would be broken. Nine days later, Larry Bird eclipsed Kevin McHale...'s 56 point record and collected 60 points in a 126-115 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. Kevin McHale played for the Boston Celtics for the entirety of his Hall of Fame NBA career (1980-1993). He was best known for being a huge part of the one of the greatest NBA frontcourts of all-time.
