Today in the shop we had a conversation about culture. We like to think we can broach any subject and feel safe between these bricks. Safe enough to say how we really feel and ask questions we are embarrassed to ask. This chat came at the tail end of a course on how to cornrow hair. The embarrassing question? Can I wear these cornrows? asks ,Whitey Mc Cracker. Have you ever stopped for a second to think about the importance of the different hairstyles throughout black cultu...re? Hair in 15th century Africa had deep meaning for people. You could tell someones social status, marital status, as well as which tribe they belonged to,all from how they wore their hair. It was also at the center of human connection as some of the styles took hours upon hours to complete. The enslavement of these Africans meant they were stripped of a huge part of their identity immediately after being enslaved.Their hair was shaved to take away the status they had maintained in their homeland. This was done to assert power, to lessen the power of black culture. As time went on. Cornrows became woven into black culture. It was a style that overworked slaves could make time to take care of each other. It also meant they could feel good about their hair without having to do it everyday. Many black men and women used their hair as a form of freedom. A way that allowed them to escape the white American norm. Although their hair was their freedom black women and men took a lot of shit for it. The professional look was based off of the white American norm. Many people were asked to tone down their hair or told that they looked too ghetto for the workplace. This resulted in job loss and being mistreated because they didnt fit in a white corporate box. In our society today many white people are wearing hairstyles that emerged from black salons. A hairstylist featured on the documentary Braided (link below) describes this as a slap to the face because of how she,and many people she knows were mistreated because of their hair. The consensus we came to in the shop? If your going to wear it you should recognize where it came from. Dont call cornrows boxer braids.Black people have fought long and hard to use their hair as a way to express themselves and their freedom, it shouldnt be taken away. At Bay Barbers we understand the importance of the hairstyles within certain cultures. We love to embrace the cultures in our everyday work and hear peoples views. The conversation that went on in the shop today allowed people to share their views on black culture, its hairstyles that began evolving with a disempowered people. It also allowed others to listen. The barber pole historicly was used by barber surgeons. The pole would hold bandages on it for the barber to use. Barber surgeons would perform surgeries like bloodletting (surgical removal of the patients blood for therapeutic purposes). After the bloodletting was finished the barber would take the bandage off the pole to wrap the patient. When the pole was not in use it would be used as a sign for the shops.
