#TBT & #ShanaTova Just in time for the "Day of Shouting or Blasting" and the "Day of Atonement" we received this photo of historic memorabilia from BB Camp circa 1937. These items have been generously donated to the camp community from Joel Hershfield. Joel's father Leible Hershfield had these items from his time as Waterfront Director at the Wpg. Beach BB Camp location. If you have a photo, story or piece of our history to share, please contact us. Rosh Hashanah (Hebrew: ... ), literally meaning "head [of] the year", is the Jewish New Year. The biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah ( ), literally "day of shouting or blasting". It is the first of the Jewish High Holy Days ( Yamim Nora'im. "Days of Awe") specified by Leviticus 23:2332 that occur in the early autumn of the Northern Hemisphere. Rosh Hashanah is a two-day celebration that begins on the first day of Tishrei, which is the seventh month of the ecclesiastical year. In contrast to the ecclesiastical year, where the first month Nisan, the Passover month, marks Israel's exodus from Egypt, Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the civil year, according to the teachings of Judaism, and is the traditional anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve, the first man and woman according to the Hebrew Bible, and the inauguration of humanity's role in God's world. Rosh Hashanah customs include sounding the shofar (a cleaned-out ram's horn), as prescribed in the Torah, following the prescription of the Hebrew Bible to "raise a noise" on Yom Teruah. Its rabbinical customs include attending synagogue services and reciting special liturgy about teshuva, as well as enjoying festive meals. Eating symbolic foods is now a tradition, such as apples dipped in honey, hoping to evoke a sweet new year. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosh_Hashanah)

Hi Folks! Been a busy and strange summer here at camp. For those of you who haven't been following along @bbondemand, here's a little update on what's waiting for you next summer! With the help of over 50 staff throughout the summer, we cleaned, inventoried, and organized every inch of this island removing over 3000KG of junk from under buildings, and cluttered closets. We've continued and expanded capital improvement projects re-roofing 7 buildings, building new decks and... stairs, and completing cabin and bathroom renovations to make camp more accessible. All of our critical infrastructure (water/waste) has been upgraded with additional redundancies, we've re-laid gravel and wood chips on all of our trails, re-lined them with fresh ties, and added some signage we made out of old canoes and dock skirting. We can't wait to welcome you back to camp next year where you will find even more site improvements as our crews work through the winter and spring. Stay tuned for 2021 dates in the coming weeks, Shana Tova!

"Hello to all campers, parents, staff and everyone else who is watching... My name is Pauline and I was supposed to be the program director at camp this year. For a lot of you, I’ve been your counsellor, kayaking instructor, section head and your outtripper. When COVID started impacting Canada, as many of you can agree, we started worrying about what was going to happen to camp. Was it going to run? Would it be different if we went? Would sessions be shorter or pushed back? ...Camp is important to all of us. It’s a place to connect with friends, be silly during programs, and often times somewhere where we challenge our fears. Whether you started camp in Habonim or Abirut, do you remember how scary it was to leave home for the first time? Or how hard it was to paddle through your first wavy day? How about getting in front of the camp and acting in your first skit? All of these things seemed so daunting, but the important thing that came out of these experiences is that you overcame them. Remember those feelings, and apply them to this summer. I think that camp being cancelled was scary for a lot of us. even though we aren’t having our typical summer, camp is still serving as a learning experience. I know we aren’t on the island as we always are, but in a way we are all getting through this together as a community. I’ve fulfilled a lot of roles on camp, but being a director was always what I dreamed of doing! Hold onto your camp dreams, because we’ll be here waiting for you next year. From Jerrod, Jacob, Lexie, Yael, Max and I - we miss you, we’re thinking about you and we cannot wait to pick up where we left off in summer 2021."
