It is January and another new running year. I usually try to spend some time planning (fantasizing?) about races for the next year. I imagine that between now and then I will train, lose weight, get faster, essentially be all that. The bottom line though, is that I will TRAIN, and any race I enter I will enjoy, and also FINISH. As I thought about potential races for 2017, I realized I had been doing this running thing since 1989, for almost 30 years. In 1989 I was convi...nced by four girlfriends and we trained for our first 10k race. We ran three times a week all summer, and on Labour Day in September we raced. I ran the race, and I was hooked. What did I love about running, that it attracted me so strongly that first year? For me, the simple play of running was great. I realized we don’t need to study for this, it is child’s play and took us back to our roots. It was SIMPLE It was SOCIAL And it boosted the confidence of a shy, introverted, geeky girl way back then, by showing me I was capable of many things that I didn’t think possible. Since that race, running has been a part of my life. Running has been a calming, constant rhythm behind this busy life. I have learned that you cannot cry and run at the same time (very hard, sobs interrupt your breathing totally), and when I have been powerless to do other things in life, I have laced up my shoes and run - doing something, anything, to move forward. Great changes have happened as well though: When I started running we didn’t carry water with us. Then we started doing that, and later it was electrolyte fluid, and then food options such as gels and bars, all helping us to run in a safer and more enjoyable manner. But the basics are the same. In fact, a cool way to run these days for those of us who work in the rat race is to leave your watch and phone at home, grab your water bottle and head out the door for an unconnected run. Years ago I read that a runner doesn’t have to decide each day whether she will run or not; instead she makes only one decision that she is a runner. And I guess that’s me See more

Why is talking about the Baby Boomer (BB) generation still a thing?
