In support of National Coaches Week, Softball BC is highlighting coaches throughout the week. Doug Allin is an Assistant Coach of the Canadian Men's National T...eam since 2015 and during that time the Canadian Men's team has won one Gold and two bronze medals over the last three WSBC world championship events. Being named Head Coach for Team BC is an honour and he is looking forward to preparing the team for the Canada Summer Games in 2022. Throughout his playing career he was fortunate to have the opportunity to play with and against some of the best teams, players, and coaches in BC, Canada, USA and around the world. As a pitcher and utility player he played for the Vancouver Grey Sox, Victoria C-9, Squamish GG team, and the Portland CR Merchants ( to name a few) all teams competed at the highest level of softball and the teams won multiple provincial medals, Western Canadian titles and competed for National championships. Once his playing career came to an end, he turned to coaching to fill the void and the passion for softball. He has led his minor team (Enderby Storm Elite) to the Provincial Gold medal and fourth place finish at the Western Canadians in 2019. Doug has been coaching since he left the game as an athlete and currently is a Competition Development Trained coach and is looking forward to sharing his knowledge and experience with the athletes from BC and the rest of Canada. Who was/is your mentor? All of the coaches I coach with and against. I feel that I am always learning by picking up small details that different coaches bring to the game. What is one of your best on-field memories? Winning the 2015 World Championship with Team Canada second is the 2019 Gold with the Enderby Storm What do you think is the most important aspect of coaching? Hard work, preparation and dedication are things that every coach can bring to a team. Preparations goes a long way in keeping athletes excited about the game wither it is preparations for games or practices. What advice would you give to an upcoming coach? Obtain your coaching levels and ensure you work harder than one on your team. Everything starts with the leadership of any team and you have to lead by example. Always stay true to ethical values and never compromise. What is your advice in regard to coach education? Keep learning and anything you can learn will always help your athletes and parents. There are so many other components to coaching that are so important and often overlooked by parents and players. Coaching education provides so to help coaches address the dynamic situations that arise on any team. Coaching can be as rewarding as playing and the most important thing we bring to the field as coaches in the ability to help shape lives beyond the game.
