BC Bird Trail 29.01.2021

Our bird feeders may be down, but that doesn’t mean that there still aren’t plenty of birds to see at the Heron Reserve! This Black-Capped Chickadee (Poecile at...ricapillus) is one of the most common local birds in the winter. They show very little fear of people, making them great for observing with kids. This particular bird was very inquisitive and came rather close to inspect me on a walk. They are most often seen in small flocks, bouncing through shrubs looking for insects and seeds. If you see a flock of chickadees watch them closely, as other small birds will join in for protection. The iconic chick a dee call which they get their name from is often used as an alarm call, which they use to warn a flock of potential danger. The number of dees in the call relate to how serious the danger is, which is why a bird will use multiple dees when near a person as we don’t represent a major threat. These little birds are cavity nesters, often using old woodpecker nests. Snags, the technical term for dead standing trees, provide valuable nesting habitat. These trees are often removed by people as they are not as attractive and could pose a fall risk, but here at the heron reserve we try to leave as many snags standing as we can. See more

An iconic bird of North America, the Bald Eagle is a large raptor distinguished by a brown body and white feathers on its head and tail. They are known to hunt for fish, mammals, and other birds, as well as scavenge for carrion. Bald Eagles are most likely to be spotted in the tops of tall trees along lakes, rivers, and coastal regions, or soaring high in the sky. They're especially common in the autumn months on the Fraser Valley Bird Trail, feasting on local spawning salmon..., as well as along the coasts of the Central Vancouver Island Trail. They also enjoy perching atop poles and trees in the farmlands on the Richmond Delta Trail, searching for their next meal. Use our self-guided itineraries plan your birding adventures and maybe you'll catch a glimpse of these epic birds!
