While obesity poses serious health risks, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease, there are many ways parents can support their teens in eating balanced diets and increasing physical activity. We recently sat down with Dr. Louise Mâsse, an investigator at BC Children’s Hospital, to learn ways that parents can best support their children in making #healthychoices that last a lifetime. We found out what #parenting style works best in helping to establish healthy behaviours, ...what app can help make being healthy fun, and much more. Parents matter even as children move into and through adolescence. Parents often think that once their child is an adolescent that they have less of a role or that the child’s peers now have more influence. While external influences do become stronger at this time, parental influence continues to matter. Parents continue to play a vital role in supporting and nurturing their child’s health choices, says Dr. Mâsse. Canadian researchers, including from BC Children's Hospital, have launched a pilot study for tracking adverse events related to flu vaccine. #Vaccines are one of society’s greatest success stories, but like any treatment, there can be rare adverse events that must be tested carefully. This new approach uses the award-winning CANImmunize app to track vaccine safety and could be used for an eventual COVID-19 vaccination campaign. The app is now being tested at The Ottawa Hospi...tal - L'Hôpital d'Ottawa and the Family Immunization Clinic at BC Children's Hospital. Heart palpitations, the sensations of irregular, rapid or forceful pulsations in the chest, are a common complaint among teens. This #SummerAtBCCHR, Abhay Katyal worked with Dr. Shubhayan Sanatanis research team on an ongoing pilot study to examine the potential role of the autonomic nervous system in generating and modulating heart palpitations. The autonomic nervous system is a control system that acts largely unconsciously and regulates bodily functions, such as the heart... rate, respiratory rate and digestion. Abhay is investigating whether adolescents with unexplained palpitations have an altered autonomic nervous system. Teens with unexplained palpitations will undergo tests that include cardiac monitoring. Test results such as heart rate variability and changes in arterial pressure will be compared to those from healthy age- and sex-matched teens. Its hoped the results of this study will play a role in illuminating the autonomic nervous system in unexplained palpitations. #heartpalpitations #autonomicnervoussystem #teens #childrenshealth #research #HeartHealth #nervoussystem

September 13 is #WorldSepsisDay. Sepsis kills 11 million people and affects 47-50 million individuals annually. Often referred to as blood poisoning, sepsis is the life-threatening condition that arises when the bodys response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs. It is frequently confused with other conditions in its early stages, with delayed recognition of the signs and symptoms quickly leading to multi-system organ failure and, ultimately, death. While i...t disproportionately affects people in low- and middle-income countries, it also takes a high toll on patients in Canada. Sepsis is the 12th leading cause of death in Canada. Rural and remote communities, including Indigenous communities, remain at a higher risk of sepsis. Cell death is an important process for our bodies to remove unwanted or damaged cells. Cancer cells are known for their ability to avoid cell death by inhibiting or inducing proteins in the cells. Understanding how remodelling of proteins is involved in cell death could help scientists find a way to promote cell death in order to remove cancer cells. Degradomics investigates how proteins are changed or degraded by protease cleavage, a key process in cell death. This #SummeratBCCHR, Gurmaan Gill is working with Dr. Philipp Langes research team to assess how degradomics can help scientists learn more about cell death mechanisms, which could inform the development of new therapies and treatments for cancer. Aniridia is a rare genetic eye disorder that causes complete or partial absence of the iris (the coloured part of the eye) and varied levels of vision loss or impairment. Most children with aniridia have low vision starting at birth and may develop blindness and other eye-related problems such as cataracts and glaucoma in their teens or adulthood. A research team headed by Dr. Elizabeth M. Simpson at BC Childrens Hospital and the University of British Columbia recent...ly presented important steps toward a future treatment for aniridia-related vision problems and blindness in kids. The team developed a CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing strategy that they used to correct an aniridia-causing mutation in a mouse model thereby restoring vision.
