So....... You received an instalment notice? Pay it... Or call CRA to adjust it. Do not complain! Just because we own businesses does not mean we are somehow entitled to preferential treatment! Do not be concerned...!! If you are a business owner and paid more than $3000 in taxes in 2018 and 2019 you WILL receive a letter. This is nothing new.... Also, do not think that because you own a business you are somehow allowed to delay payment to CRA.... Instalments are the government's way of making a fair system for all Canadians! Your employees have Tax deducted at source and you remit it as your payroll remittance. Why would we, the business owner, be exempt from the same tax obligations? If you are incorporated, and on payroll, your taxes are also deducted at source. Self employed business owners, or those incorporated but taking drawings, have been earning income all year long and therefore tax is owing on that. Pay them if you think your revenue levels are the same or greater than 2019. If you think (especially this year) that you will be under the $3000 threshold, make the call to CRA and they will be happy to adjust or remove the requirement.

The post-pandemic accounting office May 15, 2020 Author: Jeff Buckstein OTTAWA, May 15, 2020 Tax season has always been the most challenging time of year for Canadian accountants working in small to medium-size accounting firms. But COVID-19, which has occurred during the traditional tax season for accountants, is a challenge unrivalled in living memory a deadly global pandemic requiring the voluntary shutdown of a large swath of the Canadian and global economy. While the... disruption is clearly an anomaly, some of the changes practitioners needed to adapt to like an increased reliance on the use of technology may accelerate long-term changes to the traditional accounting office in Canada. I suspect people are going to get used to the idea that you don’t have to physically travel to meet with people, says Steven Flynn, a partner with Andersen Tax LLP in Vancouver. Whether it’s doing something from your house and working with an accounting firm, either in your city, or another location, when people realize that it can be pretty streamlined and efficient to work electronically and with video conferencing, that will probably change the way people work with their accountants. The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced the concept of social distancing. This has severely curtailed and, in many instances, eliminated face-to-face contact with clients since the partial government mandated lockdown began in March. (Click on the link to read more.....)

Good morning everyone. As you are most likely aware, BCD Accounting has been continuing to work during these uncertain times. I want to take this time to thank each of you for your patience in my delay in sometimes responding to your concerns. Our office has been very busy during this time.... As of Saturday places like golf courses and marinas are opening and as of Tuesday the Province is going to be opening even further business, including retail locations. Please make sure you meet the guidances placed for your business sector's health and safety for yourself, your employees and your customers. (for our clients, please refer to previous emails I sent when the Province first introduced the sector specific guidances). These guidances, although called guidances, are not "optional" in most cases. Social Distancing measures, walk through flow patterns, barriers and personal protective gear as well as increased cleaning and monitoring will be necessary for most businesses in our client roster. You may also be deciding on when is the right time to return your staff to their jobs. While we are here to assist you wherever we can, the CEWS and CEBA applications will need to be done by the employer as they are done through your "My Business Account". I will answer, as best I can, any questions you have, but I have heard the forms for the CEWS (Wage Subsidy) are complicated and you may want to set aside time when you can "peacefully" work through them. Remember that you will need to apply for CEWS in EACH of the three pay periods being covered and remember that CEWS is a subsidy, meaning it is reimbursing you for payroll you have already paid. It is not like the loan where you receive the funds and then spend it as you required on the acceptable purchases. Personally I must admit I have really enjoyed NOT being on the road and because of the risk of a "second wave" I feel it is very important for us to remain extremely vigilant. I DO have the luxury of being able to remain in seclusion the majority of the time and I am happy to continue with that. For the foreseeable future, unless absolutely unavoidable, we are going to continue with only working from our office. We are currently looking at a weatherproof box and it will be for the purpose of drop offs and pickups. I also today, have ordered cloth masks. I want all of our clients to know we are being as cautious as we can be. IF we do need to make a visit at client office we will be prepared to obey what industry standard requirements are in place. I hope you all have a wonderful Victoria Day Weekend. Please continue to practice social distancing and even though it is hard remain close to home and don't ...(Message to myself ) ... encourage people who do not live in your home to visit you. --

RESPONSIBILITY AND RESPECT. #DoOurPart As Premier Ford and his government slowly allow business sectors to reopen, we are all, I am sure, looking forward to visiting our favourite shops. Our businesses are "getting ready". They are investing money (which is harder to come by after weeks of limited revenues... If any at all) in the practical ways Health and Safety Guidelines say they must. The province of Ontario has set out guidelines of what businesses must do prior to re-o...pening. Plexiglass protective barriers, markings on the floor, gloves and masks if necessary, a staff who can oversee foot traffic to allow safe social distancing.... Protecting themselves and their customers will become increasingly important for business owners as they do their part to protect us from the spread of Covid19. But #WetheConsumers...... We have a very necessary role to play, don't we? With more businesses being allowed to open, we all must be a part of the solution! Do your part! While waiting for #yourturn, Don't get angry at the person overseeing foot traffic, when in the shop, abide by the rules for traffic flow, always be observant of those around you, and finally, don't dilly dally (get in, get what you need, get out). And don't forget, a smile is not hidden just because you have a mask on. Your whole face changes when you smile. #Smile!
