Another tough year for wild salmon stocks.
Interior steelhead stocks need SARA status
B.C. salmon are in a vulnerable state, but long-established Indigenous fishing technologies could be one solution. This suggestion comes from a new study publ...ished in the journal BioScience. In it, the authors conclude that revitalizing Indigenous fishing management systems and technologies could support the sustainable harvest of salmon and strengthen Indigenous governance. See more
Another large slide on a productive salmon stream...and still the rain pours.
For those that are concerned about IFS stocks.
This is a story you may have heard before, and for good reason: it’s affects outdoor users across BC In our province access to public land can be blocked by... private companies, which is exactly what happened to local anglers when the Douglas Lake Cattle Company blocked access to public lakes on their property near Merritt. For years, the Nicola Valley Fish & Game Club have been fighting in the courts to restore access to these lakes for recreational fishing and nature enjoyment. But what makes this story extra special is that this case could create a ripple effect for access to lakes and public recreation sites across the province. Recognizing that we represent a voice to over 100,000 outdoor recreation users in BC, the Court of Appeal granted ORC intervenor status in this case. But to continue this kind of influential work, we need your help. If you’d like to join our cause to protect access to outdoor recreation in BC please consider making a gift today. We’ve got five days left to meet our target of raising $5000 - we would be so grateful for your support! https://bit.ly/3mqUHrI : Tomasz Filipek
BCFFF is a longstanding member of the Outdoor Rec Council...with more and more issues with private land limiting access to public waterways this appeal could have many implications.
We are so excited to share this amazing podcast with Steelhead biologist and angler Robert Hooton on his book Days of Rivers Past. Thank you Lawrence and Blue Fish Radio for caring about wild steelhead. :) Please contact the BCFFF if you wish to purchase a copy of the book. ttps://www.spreaker.com/user/5725616/e320-days-of-rivers-past-and-robert-hoot
The Osprey continues to be a leading source for new research and critical policy discussions focused on wild steelhead and salmon conservation. It is required r...eading for advocates, anglers, and resource managers working to restore wild steelhead and salmon to their home waters. The Wild Steelhead Coalition is proud to be a supporter of their important work. The Fall 2020 issue includes extensive articles on the state of the White Salmon River following dam removal, the importance of coldwater refugia in a warming world, changes to salmon habitat caused by melting glaciers, and a devastating assessment of failed fishery management in Canada's fisheries agencies.
