During the current COVID-19 pandemic, mental health awareness is more important than ever. The Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence and viaSport British Columbia have recently partnered with Buddy Check for Jesse, a program bringing awareness to mental health in sport. The society was created by Dr. Stu Gershman in memory of his son Jesse Short-Gershman who tragically took his life in 2014 after struggling with mental health issues. Congratulations to BC Games alumnus Hunter Arulpragasam on signing with the University of Toronto men’s volleyball program Varsity Blues for the 2021-22 season! Hunter competed at the 2018 BC Summer Games and went on to help the MEI Eagles 2019 2A senior boys win the provincial title. The governor general has announced the newest members of the Order of Canada, one of our country’s highest civilian honours and among the 114 new appointees is BC Games former official Tim Frick! Congratulations to BC Games alumna Sydney Wright on joining the University of the Fraser Valley women’s volleyball program! Sydney competed at the 2018 BC Summer Games and went on to join the Panthers and lead them to the title at the Coquitlam RCMP Red Serge Classic. The City of Prince George is getting ready to pick their volunteer board of directors for the 2022 BC Summer Games, which are scheduled to take place July 21 to 24, 2022. The nomination selection committee will be picking individuals from the public to serve, organize and oversee the games. BC Games alumnus Matti Erickson has committed to the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore., for the fall 2021 semester! Matti competed at the Cowichan 2018 BC Summer Games where he won gold, and in June 2019, beat his own provincial record, winning three gold medals at the B.C. Team Canada athletes are passing along some of their wisdom gained from sport into the business world. One of whom is BC Games alumna Thea Culley who competed at the 2000 BC Summer Games and is the most internationally experienced member of the women’s field hockey team. When she retired from sport, she returned to school to pursue her MBA and now uses the skills she learned in sport in her career in business. Let's hear it for Jack Ratcliffe, inaugural award recipient and namesake of the "Jack Ratcliffe Commitment to Community Award!" Jack was the Director of Administration of the Kimberley 1980 BC Winter Games Society, and is being recognized for his significant contribution to Kimberley by selflessly enhancing the quality of life for the community since the early 1970’s until his retirement just weeks ago. Check out Team Canada's article on BC Games alumna Avalon Wasteneys who competed at the 2012 BC Winter Games. Avalon went on to win three team gold medals at the 2017 Canada Summer Games and first place at the 2018 World U23 Championships. She is currently training for the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
