November 19th is known internationally as Children's Grief Awareness Day. The blue butterfly represents hope and is used around the world to raise awareness for grieving children and youth who can be the 'forgotten mourners' when someone dies in their family. It is important to let them know we are here for them. In Canada, one child in 50 is bereaved*.#KidsGrief #childrensgriefawarenessday #BCHPCA

PRESS RELEASE: Volunteers, vital to the future of hospice care and part of the essential care team Pandemic or not Oct 1, 2020 | Front Page, News, Press Release Vancouver, BC, October 1, 2020 at 11:00 am... Hospice palliative care volunteers play an important role in supporting the programs offered by hospice societies across British Columbia. These dedicated volunteers can be found at hospitals, inpatient units, client’s homes and residential care facilities, and in grief support groups in our communities. Like paid staff, hospice volunteers are equally important in the continuum of care and have played a lead hand in the success of hospices since the beginning of time. The BCHPCA has put out a statement highlighting the needs of hospice societies during the pandemic to ensure that hospice volunteers can continue the work they are skilled and trained to do with inclusive protocols and accessibility. It’s International Self-Care day and BCHPCA would like to encourage frontline workers, volunteers, and caregivers to take a break at some point of the day to prioritize your well-being and practice self-care. There are several ways that may work for you; such as, calling an old friend, listening to happy music, going for a walk, reflecting on your self-improvement, virtually visiting a long time companion, meditating or simply expressing how you feel at the moment. What are you doing to take a break? Are you celebrating? Please visit our campaign page for more information and ways to celebrate International Self-Care Day. BCHPCA can provide resources for you to overcome this phase by connecting you to our hospices within our communities that have trained volunteers, counsellors, and spiritual support. Please visit our campaign page to learn more about grieving and life after death. Share with us what you do at #BCHPCA #iselfcare https://bchpca.org/campaigns/international-self-care-day/

BCHPCA would like to thank frontline workers, caregivers, and volunteers who have been taking care of our most vulnerable populations in our communities during these unprecedented times. Putting the needs of others comes easily to frontline workers; however, taking care of your well-being is equally important in order to take care of others. The BCHPCA pauses to reflect and remind our hospice providers and the palliative care community of the role they play within marginalized communities and what we may do as a first step in becoming aware of our implicit biases.
