Henry "Harry" Winston Jerome was a Canadian track and field sprinter and physical education teacher. He won a bronze medal at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo and set a total of seven world records over the course of his career.
Hogan's Alley was the unofficial name of the T-shaped intersection at the southwest edge of Strathcona, centered between Prior and Union, and Main and Jackson. It was home to much of Vancouver's Black community, including Nora Hendrix, grandmother to rock legend Jimi Hendrix, and included businesses such as Vie's Chicken and Steak House. Beginning in 1967, the City of Vancouver began leveling the western half of Hogan's Alley to construct the Georgia Viaduct, which as completed in 1971.
Joseph Seraphim Fortes, known as Joe Fortes, taught children to swim and patrolled the beach at English Bay. In 1900, the City of Vancouver appointed him its first official lifeguard. In 1910, the City honoured him for his many years of service to the public. He died on February 4th, 1922. On June 24th, 1927, the citizens of Vancouver dedicated a monument to him.... In 1976, the Joe Fortes Branch of the Vancouver Public Library was dedicated to him, and in 1985, the Joe Fortes Seafood & Chop House restaurant opened. See more

#OnThisDay - September 1, 1980 - near Thunder Bay, ON . @terryfoxfoundation #tryliketerry #canadianhero . As he neared the 18 mile mark, Terry could see miles of supporters along the highway, cheering him on, saying, Keep going, you can do it, we’re all behind you. Terry felt like he was having a heart attack, the pain was so intense. He took a break and crawled into his sleeping bag, hoping the pain might subside. It didn’t. Terry got back up, ran another mile until he co...uld see no more people along the road. It was then he said to himself, This may be my last mile. He got in the van and asked his best friend Doug to take him to a hospital. Later that day, Terry called his parents in Port Coquitlam and told them the cancer had returned. He had run his last mile of the Marathon of Hope. . In his last journal entry, all Terry wrote was: "21 miles. 3,339 miles total." . Honour Terry's Try. Donate today.
