Merry Christmas and happy holidays from all of us at the VAMC! The second of our 2020 Christmas video trio is the dearest to our hearts. After a year that saw o...ur spring concert cancelled and all in-person rehearsals halted, we managed to come through with a digital effort that represents our undying love for music-making. We look forward to when we can get back to singing together soon! During a year which has been very tough on our choir financially, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to our choir to help us get through a darker time. Our revenue is generated primarily through ticket sales which have not been able to happen over the past several months, so we rely on kind donations such as yours to keep Canada's longest-running male choir active. If you would like to help out, you can find more information on our website at https://vamc.ca/support/ Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

This email was recently sent from the Raffi Foundation for Child Honouring. Dear music director or educators, As Executive Director of the Raffi Foundation, I am writing to introduce you to an important new social justice songBlack Lives Matter To Me"by beloved children’s singer Raffi. ... Raffi says, We have an historic opportunity to heal the wounds of racism and injustice. In support of the Black Lives Matter movement, I wrote this as a song that people everywhere might sing, citing Martin Luther King’s stirring words, 'let freedom ring.’ Professor and author Rekha Rajan, internationally renowned music educator and arts advocate says, For decades, Raffi’s songs have helped children understand the world around them. With his newest song, Black Lives Matter to Me, Raffi translates one of the most important movements in our history into an accessible, meaningful song for listeners of any age. The song is available for streaming and as a free download on the Raffi Foundation website https://raffifoundation.org/news/black-lives-matter-to-me/ For choir directors, a piano arrangement can also be downloaded for free. I hope you will share the song widely with music educators throughout your province. As schools across Canada have returned, we hope that this song may serve as a tool to spark dialogue and conversation around this important topic. And, imagine how amazing it would be if your class or choir recorded your version of the song and posted it on social media (please tag us so that we can find it as well). Please feel free to contact me anytime with questions. Best wishes, Dana Ypma | Executive Director, Raffi Foundation for Child Honouring PO Box 737 Salt Spring Island, BC, V8K 2W3 T: 250-931-3190 Email: [email protected] Website: raffifoundation.org

As the celebration of our 80th anniversary continues, the Pacific Blue Big Band debuts a new composition by its leader, PO 2 Barrie Sorensen. Written during the... Covid-19 pandemic, the piece comes from general feelings and moods felt by reflecting on fond memories from earlier in life, including life in the band before quarantine. HONOUR ENSEMBLES ANNOUCEMENT After a long and very difficult decision process we have come to the conclusion that it will not be possible to hold our annual BCMEA Honour Ensembles in the 2020-2021 school year. The Honour Ensembles team sincerely hoped to make this opportunity available for students this school year, but the BC Ministry of Education’s Provincial COVID-19 Health & Safety Guidelines for K-12 Settings states "In-person inter-school events (including competitions,... tournaments and festivals) should not occur at this time and, therefore, the program cannot go forward for the foreseeable future. We sincerely appreciate the support we receive each and every year from the students and teachers across the province and we look forward to the time that this program can be offered again with its opportunities for student and teacher learning and collaboration. Please stay safe and healthy, Janet Wade, Carrie Taylor, Katy Kerr, Imran Amarshi, Carmella Luvisotto, and Tristan Clausen
