Four years is the average lifespan of Spot Prawns in BC! In their third year of life, females will reproduce and carry eggs for about six months before the eggs hatch
BC Spot Prawns are harvested by trap, these traps are attached to a long-line deployed along the ocean floor. During the season, traps are left to soak for around 24 hours and can be hauled once per day!
Spot Prawns are so versatile, they are even delicious deep-fried!
Spot Prawns live as males until they reach maturity at around two years. At that time, males will reproduce once, gradually over about 8 months, and transform into females during their third year
What’s your favourite way to prepare wild BC Spot Prawns?
During the commercial Spot Prawn season, harvest log requirements mean that vessel masters are responsible for the provision and maintenance of an accurate record of daily harvest operations. They are required to record date, time, catch, and fishing location. The harvest log must be submitted to the fisheries management agency at the end of each fishing season!
Happy November! During the winter, most Spot Prawns carry eggs. For this reason, the commercial fishery occurs well after the winter months!
