<3 Saying goodbye to a celebrated Canadian composer and a dear friend of the Richmond Branch. Linda Niamath passed away peacefully on September 16, 2020 in Vancouver, BC, at the age of 81. She is will be sadly missed by her husband of 55 years, Kent, daughters Wendy and Cheryl, and son-in-law Paul Lesack. Linda was born and grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia. When she was five years old, she begged her parents for a piano, and started composing with the encouragement of ...her first piano teacher. At the age of sixteen, she composed the score for a ballet, Stanley Park Sketches, which was performed at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. After earning her ARCT in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music, and her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of British Columbia, she taught elementary school in Vancouver as a music specialist. Linda was a kind and compassionate person with a wonderful sense of humour, and the best mother anyone could hope to have. She had many strong and enduring friendships and took great pleasure in connecting with others. She and Kent always had fun together, no matter what they were doing, but Linda especially enjoyed gardening, travelling, cooking, reading (and underlining the important parts!), listening to music, and visiting with friends and family. Linda was a highly-regarded composer and Honorary Fellow of the Royal Conservatory of Music; several generations of children around the world have learned to play her wonderful and expressive pieces at their piano lessons. She is best known for her eleven albums of piano music for the young pianisther legacy for future generations. No service or celebration of life is currently planned. In lieu of flowers, donations in Linda’s memory may be made to your favourite charity. Condolences for the family may be left at www.kearneyfs.com.

NEWS TO SHARE ABOUT NEW ONGOING REMOTE EXAM OPPORTUNITIES Remote Exams are a convenient and flexible way to attain a comprehensive RCM Certificate. Here are the top 3 things you need to know to prepare your student for their next exam. 1. Equivalent Assessment Calibre One of the hallmarks of the RCM Certificate Program is that it is a global standardized curriculum and assessment system. Students who opt for a practical Remote Exam are assessed on the same criteria by the... RCM College of Examiners as they would be with an in-person exam. Similarly, online theory exams are developed in conjunction with the RCMs Academic Office and College of Examiners to provide the same assessment in person or online. Whether you complete your exam at home or at an exam centre, you can rest assured you are earning the same RCM recognition. 2. Exams on Your Schedule With Remote Exams, students no longer have to wait for an available exam session. From the moment you feel your student is ready, they can complete a practical Remote Exam within a two-week period, pending availability. For online theory exams, they can start their exam as soon as you think they are ready. The exam is available when they purchase the accompanying online course materials. Keep in mind that registration for a practical Remote Exam starts June 2, 2020. 3. Device Agnostic With Remote Exams all you need is a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer with internet access. So whatever side of the Android vs. iOS debate you fall on, were not judging and we can definitely help your student earn their certificate. BCRMTA COVID-19 BULLETIN #4 Message from the President During the past several weeks, as British Columbians and Canadians, we have all been working hard to do our part in flattening the curve of the COVID-19 pandemic. Last week, Dr. Bonnie Henry, Minister Adrian Dix and Premier John Horgan announced the plan for the reopening of the BC economy and what that would mean for BC residents. The most salient point was, that although we have flattened the curve, we are not yet o...ut of the woods. However, there were glimmers of hope for the extending of our contacts in the coming days. Having said that, the requirement to maintain physical distancing is still in place. In March, BCRMTA recommended that all member teachers consider immediately ceasing face to face lessons. To our knowledge, teachers have made monumental efforts to move their teaching online and have worked really hard to maintain contact with students and their families. In light of the information provided by the BC Government last week, BCRMTA is suggesting that all member teachers continue to avoid face to face teaching. If circumstances allow in person lessons, it is strongly advised that Government guidelines are strictly enforced.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SUPPORT RE: COVID-19 The Federal Government has initiated the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) to help workers and businesses. Essentially, many our CFMTA/FCAPM music teachers would benefit from the CERB initiative, since we are self-employed individuals. Some pertinent facts: The CERB will apply to wage earners, as well as contract workers and self-employed individuals who would not otherwise be eligible for Employment Insurance (EI). ...The portal for accessing the CERB will be available in early April. Canadians should begin to receive their CERB payments within 10 days of application. The CERB is to be paid every four weeks until October 3, 2020. The link to take you to this and more information is: https://www.canada.ca//economic-/covid19-individuals.html Remember too, that your own Member of Parliament is there for you and is able to provide assistance as well.
