Each time Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers are called out for a rescue there is stress on the system, people and medical staff required to respond. During times of a pandemic it is imperative that we ride responsibly to try to reduce the number of callouts required by these volunteers who come to help should a snowmobiler become, lost, injured or involved in an avalanche. Here are a few ways we can up our safety game in the backcountry. https://www.bcsf.org//how-to-support-search-and-rescue-whi #bcSar #sledsafer #ridetosurvive #supportSAR

British Columbia Snowmobile Federation 01.12.2020

A message from Fernie Search and Rescue... In numerous rescues where we have responded by helicopter, it has been a challenge for us to identify the party in di...stress. The nature of emergency calls is that we are generally responding with incomplete information, whether it be precise location, # of subjects, what the party are wearing, or even the exact nature of the emergency. As such, when we spot a group in the general area of the reported incident we must spend time assessing from the air whether this is the group requiring assistance. Our request is to make use of the standard visual signals for communicating with a helicopter as this will allow to get to where help is needed faster.

Hi Everyone, Most are probably wondering why we haven’t groomed yet. At the beginning of the season, we had snow, but then it warmed up and froze. It’s too dif...ficult to groomed a hard pack snow base. At that time, I noticed a leak on a hydraulic line. It requires special o-rings which aren’t available locally, so I’ve had to order them from Allcat in Kelowna. With Christmas, that put a delay on getting them. With the leak, it’s not feasible to operate. Once I get the o-ring changed out, I will get the trail groomed. I appreciate everyone patience. Thanks Russell Janssen MISB President

A sad night last night for our member club the Kamloops Snowmobile Association. Apparently an arsonist lit their shelter up the Tranquille on fire. Many hours of hard work by volunteers just up in smoke. The club has worked hard to build and maintain this shelter for the public to use. Now one selfish person or group of people took it all away. If you have any information regarding who may have done this please report them to the RCMP immediately! The club is assessing what insurance they have but with the price of wood these days it is likely not going to be near enough. This is a very popular shelter for sledders around Kamloops so watch their Facebook page to keep up to date on how you can help!

Over the last few years, we have been noticing an inspiring trend: an increase in the general population of snowmobilers who are getting the education and are riding prepared with the equipmentespecially from the Prairie provinces. This is great! On the flip side, however, we are losing an alarming number of riders who are avalanche-skills trained, sponsored riders and ambassadors for the sport of snowmobiling. Two Williams Lake men have been fined $9, 050 in connection with snowmobiling in areas closed to protect mountain caribou the largest fines imposed in B.C. pr...ovincial court related to caribou closures in a precedent-setting case for the Conservation Officer Service. One man was fined $5,050 after being found guilty of operating a snowmobile in a closed area, obstructing a Conservation Officer and failing to stop when required to do so. The other man was fined $4,000 for operating a snowmobile in a closed area. The majority of the fines - $8,700 - will go to the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation. In March 2019, CO’s and RCMP conducted a joint helicopter patrol of snowmobile closures east of Williams Lake. Two snowmobilers were seen operating within the Grain Creek snowmobile closure near Quesnel Lake. The two operators went to significant efforts to evade all attempts by officers to make contact but were eventually arrested near Caribou Lake. Recreational snowmobiling in illegal areas can displace mountain caribou from high-quality winter habitat, threatening an already endangered population. Snowmobile closures to protect critical mountain caribou habitat are in place across B.C. - more than one million hectares across the mountain caribou range are closed to motorized winter recreation to support population recovery. The COS hopes these significant fines will deter any snowmobilers from a similar incident. Snowmobile closure patrols will continue throughout this winter season. To report violations, please call the RAPP line. #BCCOS #WilliamsLake #RAPP

Trees are vital. As the biggest plants on the planet, they give us oxygen, store carbon, stabilize the soil and lend food and habitat to wildlife. They also provide us with the materials needed for tools and shelter. Although cerebrally we understand trees are incredibly important, many a snowmobiler has a love/hate relationship with trees they encounter while riding. Here are a few reasons why. https://www.bcsf.org/articles/when-trees-fight-back #bcsf #sledsafer #treewells #boondocking #backcountryfreeriding #snowmobile #snowbike

Land access work in the Elk Valley is being successful! This past August the BC Snowmobile Federation and our member clubs the Fernie Snowmobile Association and the Elkford Snowmobile Association were working hard to be provided an opportunity to participate in a local project called the Elk Valley Cumulative Effects Management Framework. (EVCEMF) This project intends to restore industrial roads in the Elk Valley that will restrict public access to areas for the protection ...of habitat for Grizzly Bears, Big Horn Sheep, and Westslope Cutthroat Trout. While we support the goals of the project we believe it needs to be balanced with the tourism and recreational values of the people in the Elk Valley. With no public process provided the snowmobile clubs needed to ensure there was a voice from the snowmobile sector. So far we have been successful in: Saving the Ptolemy Trail and the Heartbreak Trail for this season; Being provided the opportunity to submit our written comments; Bring provided a seat on the EVCEMF Working Group going forward; and Expanded our project team to include the other motorized clubs represented by Quad Riders ATV Association of British Columbia - ATVBC and BC Off-Road Motorcycling - BCORMA Read the full story and the BCSF response letter at https://www.bcsf.org//elk-valley-cumulative-effects-framew Elkford ATV Club Elk Valley Adventure and Dirt Riding Summit Creek Cabins #joinasnowmobileclub #strengthinnumbers #membershipscount #ferniesnowmobileassociation #elkfordsnowmobileassociation #EVCEMF #tourismfernie #tourismelkford

We are very excited to announce that the Kelowna Snowmobile Club has rejoined the BC Snowmobile Federation. We look forward to working with their Board of Directors and Members to further the goals of the Federation overall. The British Columbia Snowmobile Federation (BCSF) was formed in 1965 by a small group of snowmobile racers. Our original purposes as set out in our constitution was to develop an organization that was dedicated to safety, the growth of the sport, prote...ction of the environment, and securing access to public lands for all. The BCSF has been campaigning for the preservation of riding areas since its inception. The BCSF no longer has racing roots but the founding principles have carried the Federation forward more than 55 years. The BCSF now collectively represents 61 snowmobile clubs, 7,300 members and 44,000 riders in the Province of BC. On the ground, our member clubs are non-profit societies maintained by caring volunteers who promote safety, stewardship, and responsible backcountry snowmobile recreation. The Kelowna Snowmobile Club has been doing this since 1968! Please give their members a warm BCSF welcome and we look forward to working together to create a stronger, more unified voice for snowmobiling in BC. #strongertogether #welcomeback #provincialvoice #BCSF

B.C.’s Shuswap region has a sled-friendly landscape to say the least. Snowmobilers come here for trail riding, boondocking, hill climbing and cruising through tree-lined terrain. We checked out sledder-friendly businesses from Sicamous to Salmon Arm, and found a selection of top snowmobiler-friendly accommodations, restaurants and attractions in the area. Snowmobilers please take a few minutes to complete this survey to ensure they have input from all backcountry users. The SFU Avalanche Research Program is conducting a new study on social media use and avalanche safety. Along with Avalanche Canada, they are looking at how social media has changed how information about trips into the backcountry and avalanche safety is shared with both positive and negative consequences. The results of this research will help them to take ad...vantage of the opportunities that social media offers to improve avalanche safety and help everybody avoid any potential pitfalls. Click here to participate: https://www.avsocmedia.avalancheresearch.ca/ Note: If you wish to remain anonymous, please do not comment, like, or share this post as it may identify you as a participant in this study. #AvalancheResearch #AvCan #Avalanche

With a limited number of days to enjoy each year, many snow obsessed riders will go to extremes to gain as much seat time as humanly possible. Sometimes this means adjusting work schedules and family obligations to make time for snowmobiling, but others may take their commitment to snowmobiling a few steps further to what can be considered Hardcore!. https://www.bcsf.org/articles/are-you-a-hardcore-sledder #bcsf #snowmobiling #hardcoresledder #supportyoursport #joinaclub

Many of you likely saw the recent loss of a shelter by an arsonist in the Kamloops Area. This is the latest of many vandalism and thefts that have occurred in the last five years. Big things happening in Fernie for the Fernie Snowmobile Association. I can't wait to see their new groomer out on the snow this season! We know it took a lot of hard work from the volunteers and members of FSA to raise enough money to make this kind of investment for their community. Many do not understand the cost of a groomer so does anyone want to take a guess on what the list price was for this beauty? #volunteersmakeithappen #joinasnowmobileclub #investinginruralBC

#MeettheBCSFBoard Amanda L'Heureux- Director I became involved with organized snowmobiling when I first learned of area closures. I'm going into my 3rd year on the board with BCSF. I’m a founding director with a brand new club within the BCSF, Kakwa Park Snowmobile Club as well as secretary/memberships. I have been on a snowmobile since I was young, started on a 1979 Enticer and I now ride a 2018 Freeride. I’ve been a backcountry/mountain rider for 9 years.... I enjoy the outdoors in all seasons but I’m happiest when it’s snowing! I like to share my love of snowmobiling with family and friends. #bcsf #boardofdirectors #supportyoursport #kakwaparksnowmobileclub #princegeorgesnowmobileclub #beavolunteer

Snowmobilers are a different breed of humans. Set apart somewhat from the general population by our passion for snow, when others are cursing it, try as we may, we simply don’t fit into the general population. We try though. We try to be logical, and responsible with our decision-making processes, but sometimes even we don’t believe the words coming out of our mouths. Here are some examples. https://www.bcsf.org//silly-things-sledders-say-even-they- #bcsf #snowmobiling #snowmobileculture #powstoke #sledders #sledculture
