This #ThrowbackThursday, we are recognizing the amazing success of the Butterfly Run Vancouver 2020, which took place virtually on October 3+4. "The success of the Butterfly Run Vancouver 2020 has been humbling and heartwarming. Despite the pandemic, despite the event being virtual, despite it all - this community has come together and raised an impressive amount of money, and more importantly shown up for each other with love, support, and understanding. And that’s really w...hat it’s all about. - Kim Lockhart, co-chair of Butterfly Run Vancouver The small but mighty team of community organizers adapted to every challenge presented and surpassed last year’s fundraising amount by raising an outstanding $64,000! The incredible support for families who have experienced pregnancy loss, child loss, or infertility was visible across social media and the entire province as runners and walkers of all ages participated virtually. Of the total amount raised, $45,000 will support the work of the Foundation and reproductive mental health research through the BC Reproductive Mental Health Program at BC Women’s Hospital. This research will help parents, such as those experiencing pregnancy loss, receive the mental health support they need, when they need it. The remaining $19,000 will provide community support through other organizations such as Fertility Canada and the Aboriginal Mother Center Society. Thank you to all the organizers and participants for making this such an amazing event. Learn more: Butterfly Run Vancouver

You are so brave; you are so strong. Ava received exceptional healthcare, when she needed it most from BC’s dedicated women’s hospital. But the reality is women are experiencing serious inequities that impact their physical, mental, and emotional well-being primarily because of their gender. I had already shared my experience several times and was scared and reluctant to try again, but I was even more frightened of what would happen if I didn’t get help. When I arrived a...t BC Women’s Hospital, I had an unexpected feeling: hope. - Ava Cheung, Grateful Patient. Meet Dr. Sadiq Abdulla, Obstetrics Anesthesiologist; Tracy Vine, Clinical Nurse Leader; and the BC Womens Maternal Program team. Read on as they reflect on how their jobs have changed since the pandemic. Giving birth during the pandemic is a lonely experience. Family members are unable to provide the support to women in labour and the postpartum period that they otherwise would have been able to do. The healthcare team has filled this void by offering a hand to hold or wo...rds of encouragement. I hope that this empathy will persist long after the pandemic is over. - Dr. Abdulla (pictured: centre) COVID-19 has increased the amount of information we need to absorb and disseminate across the program -- sometimes changing several times a day. Change is often the only constant in nursing and life and its usually met with trepidation and negativity, but the team happily faced the changes while following best practices needed to keep our patients and staff safe. Ive been at BC Womens for almost 16 years and Ive seen highs and some lows. Being hit with a pandemic has shown me that we truly are a strong team of leaders, nurses, providers, unit clerks, social workers, and hospitality staff who have pulled together in such an amazing way! - Tracy (pictured: bottom-right) Dr. Sadiq Abdulla is pictured wearing our Essential Workers face mask, in size L.
