Pet Photo Submission with a Poem. By Susan McCaslin. Rosie’s Story Rosie fur-ball likes to lick,... cuddle, stare into my eyes, sit on my feet, circle, curl into the cave of my side. Her dreaming feet spin while she woofs and ruffs as if away from a predator or in pursuit of a squirrel. Sometimes on waking she wonders how two such as us became a pack, found each other’s otherness in such a vast universe. If she could write, she would scratch in dirt a story of how eons ago a fox huddled near a human fire till a naked, gawky beast threw her ancient grandmother a bone, a slab of meat. Uncles and aunties joined their hunts, strayed onto a divergent path. When she hears coyotes in the night ravine, something in her longs to join them, tear into a carcass, moon-howl endlessly. But then she turns to the human murmurings, senses how they have come to count on her, how much they need her hidden wildness to be in touch with their buried animal souls, learn the language of the cocked ear, the soft play-bite, the low growl, hoping to recover the senses they have lost, the wonders of nose to ground, mother earth.
