Some eye diseases do not initially cause vision loss, so it is important to rule-out any problems. As an optometrist and a mom, my patients and friends often ask me questions about eye examinations for children. Here is another common question I get. What should I expect will happen at my child’s first eye exam? Depending on the age and comfort of the child, I use a variety of hand-held equipment and traditional equipment to assess the eyes. There are no camera imaging and retinal scans. With little ones it’s back to the basics. ... There are four main areas that are checked throughout the exam: binocularity (how the muscles and eyes work together), visual acuity (how well the child sees), refraction (whether the child is farsighted, nearsighted, or has astigmatism) and ocular health. June is Cataract Awareness Month! Bonnie Doon Optical & Optometry would like to remind you that early detection and treatment of cataracts is critical to preserving sight. As the eye's lens, which sits behind the iris, grows older, its cells die and accumulate, turning the lens yellowed and cloudy. If not treated, cataracts can lead to blindness. This process is unavoidable. However, its progress can be slowed by quitting smoking, eating a balanced diet and wearing sunglasses... with 100% UVA and UVB protection. Eye injuries, certain medications and diseases such as diabetes are also known to cause cataracts. In the early stages, stronger lighting and glasses may lessen vision problems caused by cataracts. But at a certain point, cataract surgery may be necessary to improve vision.
