Check out this news story about a mauling in Montana. It highlights the danger of being around sows and cubs, but also underscores the fact that you can survive a defensive attack as was described in the article. The safety advice is sound, especially in grizzly country: hike in groups of three or more, talk and make your presence known, and carry bear spray. We would just add that the bear spray needs to be readily accessible - it's no good in your pack, it should be on a holster on your belt or other position that allows for a quick draw. http://missoulian.com//article_aa63db10-a919-11e2-882f-001

This news item from our neighbours to the south is getting a fair bit of coverage and underscores the importance about managing your attractants. Whether the man was baiting bears or just feeding the birds, it is important to note how powerful an attractant bird feeders and bird feed can be. Please take down bird feeders now and help keep bears from becoming food conditioned. http://www.inquisitr.com//elderly-man-arrested-for-shooti/

I just uploaded the new sightings map for BC for the period of Nov. 1 - Nov. 27. The number of sightings is definitely down but the bears are still along ways from having shut down for the season. ou can visit the site at http://www.bearaware.bc.ca/bear-sightings-new
