Just a casual afternoon stroll. Have you gotten to visit the Bison Herd yet? The loop road is now open! Remember to treat the bison with respect and always stay in your vehicle.

Hiking season is upon us! Waterton Lakes National Park has over 200 kilometres of hiking trails to explore. Trails are shared by different types of users. Be... considerate of your fellow trail users and stay to the right to allow others to pass. Hikers should yield to horseback riders, and cyclists should yield to both hikers and horseback riders. When yielding to other trail users, make sure to stay on the trail. Stepping off the trail causes the trail to widen and tramples surrounding vegetation. https://www.pc.gc.ca//wa/activ/experiences/randonee-hiking

See a bear from a safe distance (100m or more) while visiting Waterton Lakes? Cool! See a bear in the village, campground or a day use area? Let us know by cal...ling 1-888-927-3367. Parks Canada Wildlife Staff will respond to your call and safely escort the bears out of the area. Bears sometimes wander into high human-use areas this time of year. They are in search of early season green grass, the same as sheep and deer. Bears have an incredible sense of smell and may find garbage or unsecured attractants in high-use areas. They may associate these places with food and lose their fear of people. These bears are at the most risk of becoming habituated and food-conditioned. A fed bear is a dead bear. Help us #KeepWildlifeWild. Secure all attractants (food, garbage, coolers) in your vehicle or dispose of items properly in bear-proof garbage bins. If you encounter a bear, calmly pack up your belongings and leave the area. Always carry bear spray on you in an easily-accessible place and know how to use it. Stacking and moving rocks in our waters may cause big trouble for our fish species. It may seem harmless, but even the smallest of rock dams can cause debris to... build up and can block fish from swimming upstream. Fish like the threatened bull trout travel upstream to spawn at this time of year, and they need to be able to swim through connected habitat. Human-made barriers in the water can block their return to spawning grounds. The shallow water below a dam doesn’t allow fish to jump over the rocks. The slow water upstream of the dam can heat up in the summer sun, becoming too warm for our cold-water fish. If you see a rock dam, please take it apart or report it to Parks Canada staff. #ParksSmart #LeaveNoTrace

Make sure to leave Waterton better than you found it! We all need to do our part to make sure we can live and play in harmony with nature and her wild inhabita...nts. Do your part by following the Leave No Trace Principles (find them at www.leavenotrace.ca) and make sure to pick up your garbage/food waste. Do your part to make sure the Waterton you love stays that way for future generations! Photo by @aztecanada on Instagram

These are some of the first photos of the area we now know as Waterton Lakes National Park, taken in 1874! #ThrowbackThursday From 1872 to 1874, surveyors from... the International Boundary Commission marked out the border between the United States and Canada, and snapped these photographs along the way. Do you recognize these places? Share your photos with us in the comments! #ParksMemories It’s our 125th anniversary as a national park. Lots of lambs this year in Waterton which is great news for the bighorn sheep population! These little ones still have lots of dangers ahead, including predatio...n from cougars, coyotes, and golden eagles. With dangers from both below and above, it’s a good thing they are already able to run at top speed and can find protection in the cliffs. See more
