In our Beaty@Home Live this week, our interpreter Shiela will present examples of two ecosystems that have undergone significant changes as a result of climate change, particularly in terms of their composition or diversity. One is an intertidal ecosystem and the other focuses on a subtidal kelp ecosystem. Join us this Wednesday, December 16 at 1:00 pm PST. To register please visit link in Bio or beatymuseum.ubc.ca/calendar. Sunflower star (Pycnopodia helianthoides) from BC..., one of the Beaty's treasures! The sunflower star inhabits rocky surfaces and other substrates in the intertidal and subtidal, to depths of 435 m. It is found on the Pacific coast of North America from Alaska to California. #museumfromhome #scicomm #scied #biodiversity #marineinvertebrates #ocean #zoology

At the Beaty Biodiversity Museum, we are over the moon in love with owls! Visit bit.ly/38UmGg9 to check out our new blog post 'Owls: heavenly creatures or omens of doom?' and take a 5-minute survey by Professor Alexander Roulin and Psychologist Christine Mohr from the Université de Lausanne, who are investigating how owls are perceived globally. Survey results will be used for educational purposes to promote greater global appreciation for these wonderful birds. Barred ...Owl designed by Anna & David Hall, carved in Indonesia by two families with centuries of carving heritage, purchased at fair trade wages. The owl is carved from Albesia wood, a very swift growing tree in Indonesia, which makes it a replenishable and sustainable material for art and other manufacturing. This sculpture was part of the ‘Innovation Award’, awarded by the BC Museums Association to the Beaty Biodiversity Museum for the 'Perspectives on Biodiversity Sturgeon Harpoon Knowledge Web.'
