My heart sank this morning during a conversation with Victoria. Somehow it got to her asking me, "Did you have me because you were lonely? Because daddy is with someone?" WHAAAT!!! How do I explain to my 5 year old that being on my own is a CHOICE? That wanting a better life for myself is a CHOICE, and wanting to be a better mom without her dad is also a CHOICE?. ... We all have choices, I want her to grow up feeling happy and confident with herself, without depending on someone external to make her happy. And know that there will always be choices. To also know that having a relationship with someone would be wonderful too, if it's with the right person. But I'd rather not jump from one relationship into another, and that's MY CHOICE. So what I told her was, "The most important relationship of all, is the one we have with ourselves, it's from within us, having a healthy relationship with yourself is the ultimate LOVE. You only have one of YOU! that's why mommy works out that's why mommy meditates that's why mommy goes on a 3 day cleanse that's why mommy takes courses all the time that's why mommy writes in her gratitude journal, I need to take care of me so that I can take care of you!" ....And to that, she says "Okay mommy!" Of course I could have gone on and on about how difficult it is to cultivate that inner peace and love for yourself, but also the most rewarding...maybe I'll wait until she's 5.5 years old for that conversation. It's just another manic Monday! Whoa ooohhooo.... I used to dread Mondays...my first real job was at a pension company. During my last year there I had the worst supervisor, the kind that takes 2hr lunch breaks to go to the gym and blames eveyone else for her work mistakes. She would forbid me to speak directly to the Managing Partner, and everything must get screened by her first. She was such a bully that I would feel a panic attack coming on whenever I heard her foot...steps coming towards my workstation. Before I applied to work in her department, everyone warned me about her, how difficult and manipulative she is, but being 20-something and naive I felt like I needed to prove to myself that I could overcome any obstacle she threw my way... I thought to myself, "she can't be THAT bad" (lol oh so wrong!). What I didn't know then is that you cannot change a bully no matter how hard you try to appease them, especially one that has the power to end your career. After six years at the pension company, my "services was no longer needed". Of course I was devastated, but relieved at the same time not having to feel anxious and panicked about going to work. My health was in jeopardy, and the security of a corporate job did not feel worth it any longer. Lucky for me, while I was working there full-time, I was also freelancing as a Makeup Artist for MAC Cosmetics on the weekends which gave me something to fall back on. But let's be real, I still experienced a long period of self-doubt and depression after that loss. Imagine the ONE thing that you are most proud of is taken from you...that was how I felt at the time. Fast forward to many years later, and all of that seems like a different life. I don't recognize that scared younger version of myself. No more #ManicMondays for this girl! Now I have Mondays off...I work when I want and I LIKE my boss! Ha! It just proves that there is always a rainbow after a storm. The bully taught me to stand up for myself, and to future bullies...and believe me, they are everywhere...no matter the industry.
