We had our coding showcase today. We are so impressed with the creativity and skill shown by all the participants. Enjoy. https://youtu.be/9eXVQ0lXdWA
Great day yesterday! Our social media guru Sandra Theobald captured it beautifully! https://twitter.com/sandramtheo/status/1291538625780486151 Watch for the article in the Hometown News.
Due to a lack of interest, the Aug 10-13 virtual coding camp has been canceled. We hope to be back next summer doing a normal schedule.
You may have seen or heard about the free Hackathon in the Ottawa Valley that we are involved in to encourage girls to participate in Tech activities. We thank Hackergal, Shopify, the CEMC from Waterloo, MPP Jill Dunlop, UCDSB, CDSBEO, the Rural FASD Support Network and CBC News for helping us do this event. We have recently had some cancellations so if you know a girl between ages 10-18 who would like to learn about Lynx Coding and connect with these female tech leaders and organizations, contact us at [email protected]. https://sites.google.com/vi/hackathonintheottawavalley/home
We have just received confirmation that Christine Maki, CBC News Ottawa Producer will be joining Gail Carmichael of Shopify, Sandy Graham of the Univ. of Waterloo, Bill MacPherson, UCDSB Trustee, and Jennifer Cooney, CDSBEO Trustee in watching the presentations from our Aug 14 showcase. All five of them will provide their thoughts and feedback a couple weeks later which will be shared directly with participants. To have these five people look at your Lynx Coding project and provide feedback, please contact us at beckwithtcamp@gmail or register at https://twp.beckwith.on.ca/recreation/day-sports-camps/
You may be hearing soon if not already about a Hackathon in the Ottawa Valley in which we are a part of on Aug 6 for 40 girls in Lanark County interested in learning about Lynx Coding. However, we are offering the same training to anyone interested in learning about Lynx Coding through Beckwith Tech Camp Aug 10-13. https://twp.beckwith.on.ca/recreation/day-sports-camps/ Lynx Coding was developed by the creators of Scratch out of MIT and considered to be an intermediate le...vel of programming towards learning the Logo language. On Aug 14 from 9am to noon, we will be recording everyone's projects who participate in our virtual coding week through Google Meet. This recording will be viewed by Sandy Graham, Professor of Computer Programming at the Univ. of Waterloo, Jennifer Cooney, CDSBEO Trustee of Lanark County, Bill McPherson, UCDSB Trustee of Lanark County and Gail Carmichael, Technical Educator with Shopify all of whom will share their thoughts and observations. This recording will also be broadcasted on Cogeco TV, UCDSB TV and Beckwith Tech Camp Youtube channel.
We are thrilled to announce that we will have a modified Beckwith Tech Camp this summer for the week of August 10-14 with an unbelievable showcase on Aug 14. Keep watching the Beckwith Recreation site as we are anticipating we should be able to publicly announce this week what is happening.
We wanted to communicate that our daily Kahoot Club will continue until Friday, June 26 from 10-11am. Lowri has graciously agreed to continue hosting until that date. It is great to see the friendships and smiling faces from the participants and the level of commitment they have.
Our Kahoot Club continues to roll along every day from 10-11am. Thank you to all our participants for agreeing to post their pictures.
We had a lively time on Friday with 8 participants in Kahoot Club. Thank you to all for making it such a great day. https://drive.google.com/open https://drive.google.com/open https://drive.google.com/open https://drive.google.com/open https://drive.google.com/open... https://drive.google.com/open https://drive.google.com/open https://drive.google.com/open See more
After taking a break for a couple days, Kahoot Club started up again today. Great to see everyone connecting! We will try to get scores posted again.
We continue to bring people together through Kahoot Club. We welcomed a new participant and are still accepting new registrations. We are now connecting through Zoom conferencing instead of Google Hangouts due to Hangouts limit of 5 participants. If you would like to join the group from 10-11am M-F, please email us at our new email address [email protected]
Thank you for your patience. I believe I have made the necessary adjustments on the start time. We had our largest group to date and still have room for more people. Please feel free to email me at [email protected] to get registered for the Kahoot Club which runs from 10-11 every day. We continue to match the dates of school closure so we are now running the club to May 31 M-F. Here are today's results. https://drive.google.com/open https://drive.google.com/open ht...tps://drive.google.com/open https://drive.google.com/open https://drive.google.com/open See more
If you haven't seen the YMCA's YGym activities designed for the house, this is what we are sending our high energy folks from my school, most of whom live in townhouses. It is also getting positive feedback. Great for adults too looking to do some exercise. https://www.ymcahome.ca/ygym
Thank you all for your feedback as we figure out the best way to run Kahoot Club. To participate in the club, you will want a laptop or Android tablet/phone with a mic and camera. You will use Google Meet to speak with Lowri, the host and interact with the other participants. If you don't want others to see you, please feel free to turn your camera off. You will also have a second tab open to Kahoot where you will receive the passcode from Lowri and begin the game. The club does start at 10am and runs for an hour. We appreciate everyone's patience as we sort this out. Please feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have questions.
Day 1 of Kahoot Club had a very successful start. The participants had time to complete seven challenges. Apparently, the youth know their information better than Lowri! Check out the results. https://drive.google.com/open https://drive.google.com/open https://drive.google.com/open... https://drive.google.com/open https://drive.google.com/open https://drive.google.com/open https://drive.google.com/open See more
We have our Kahoot club setup and ready to go. Right now, we have five individuals signed up and will be capping the club at 20 participants. Lowri is using Google Meet to connect everyone so she can provide instructions as the host, go over expectations and to share the secure password in order to enter the game platform. The password changes every day in order to maintain security. We will run this club M-F until June 27. If you are interested in joining, please email me at [email protected].
We are starting to get some questions regarding our Kahoot game platform starting next week. Here are some additional details. We are establishing an interactive game platform focusing on general knowledge. The game is being monitored and hosted by Lowri who is a certified teacher and one of the counselors with Beckwith Tech Camp. She will be establishing the topics for the first week and then opening it up to the participants to establish the topics after that. We are prima...rily wanting to connect like-minded teenagers with others during this time of social isolation. We recognize security is a concern, though so rather than having the teenagers connecting through unknown servers and platforms, we wanted to connect them through a known entity. If you are interested for your daughter/son, register by emailing me at [email protected] and I will give you the security code to access the game. Rob
Today, we broadcasted Ella Haley of Open Doors Children Mental Health of Lanark County who focused on how children's sensory needs can impact their mental health. https://youtu.be/U4FlZrxE4AQ
Starting Monday, April 27 and every weekday following from 10am to 11am as long as we are in isolation, we are offering a free online Kahoot club through one of our certified instructors, Lowri. If you aren't familiar with Kahoot, think of it as a online trivia show for students ages 10-18 similar to Are You As Smart As a Fifth Grader? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XzfWHdDS9Q If interested, please email [email protected] for your free registration. Please know each day is different with no carryover so there is no obligation to attend every day.
In the meantime, if there is something in particular that you would like for us to set up during this time, we are now in a position to do so. Please feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] if you have a particular request.
Please know it is still our intention to go ahead with our summer camp in August. Depending on the situation at that time, we may run a more virtual camp with setting up a Minecraft server, daily webinars on a variety of subjects and providing distance support.
My school made our own greeting video this week. Enjoy.https://youtu.be/sgUuNCQv-vs Music by Andrew Jahn
Father Rod recently had the pleasure of recording a thank you to our community first responders to be shown on Cogeco TV. If you would like to do the same, record on your phone and email a 20-30 second video or a picture holding a sign to [email protected]. https://drive.google.com/open
Big shout out to Josiah S. for his progress on Codesters! You have caught up with Jacob M. for making the most progress of anyone to date. Anyone interested in learning the Python Language for free during this time, feel free to email us at [email protected]. Codesters has just decided to open up their entire course for free.
As part of the new partnership between the Rural FASD Support Network and Cogeco TV Smiths Falls, we have been asked if anyone would like to do a 15-30 second public service announcement thanking our first responders during this time. These PSA's will be used throughout Cogeco programming for the next little bit. I have the ability to record you remotely through Zoom conferencing and will be doing so over the next four days. Please reply to this post in the threads below if you are interested in doing this and I will book a time with you. Rob
I just posted today's video involving the daily math problems the CEMC are posting. Good math activity for families in the video. Feel free to share.https://youtu.be/8MZZRu2cJqw
I'm posting instructional videos on my favorite online programming. Today was Minecraft with all the different lessons you can do. https://youtu.be/fvEO08QW44g
