Received some photos of people getting out and enjoying some time on the ice pond in Summerside today. Thank you for the pictures Justin Owen.
Staff at BBEMA and Bernie had a chance to get out and flood the Ice Pond in Summerside , people are welcome to use it at their own risk. Staff is asking that people stay away from the concrete fish ladder at the front of the pond, avoid the tree in the middle ,as well staying clear of the back section . this is where the ice is the thinnest. Please also refrain from disturbing the muskrat lodge at the back of the pond as well. Staff got a thumbs up from Bernie on ice conditions
THE DUNK RIVER TRAIL IS MOVING... but only a few feet to the right! Our Wildlife Technicians are hard at work diverting the original path that is the Dunk River Trail away from the river. This is mitigate the potential of stream bank erosion. ... Please note the natural barriers are to guide you in the direction that are new path will be developed into! Happy Monday! #restoration #wildlife #forestry #forestryrestoration #trails #canadiantrails #greatoutdoors #wildlifetechnician #stihl #dunkriver #environment #ecosystems #watershed #atlanticsalmon #brooktrout
BBEMA staff took advantage Of another warm day to carry out some trail work at the Dunk River Trail. The old trail has now been moved to the other side of the Linden Trees to minimize the erosion. I would like to thank everyone for their co operation in following the new trail.
The staff at BBEMA would like to invite you to join us for winter nature walk, this will give everyone a chance to get outdoors for some exercise while learning about the trees, shrubs, plants, and animals around us. EVERYONE MUST REGISTER AT LINK BELOW ! we are keeping numbers low to make the event enjoyable for all. More walks will be posted in the future to help include everyone https://docs.google.com//1FAIpQLSd_TW2JFM0HmxL1Zt/viewform
It maybe an old tree ,but Jennifer woods did a great job bringing it to its festive glory with items from around the office.
BBEMA would like to thank TD Tree Days , TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, for supplying BBEMA with 104 trees for the Historic Ice Pond . Planting was carried out by the Summerside Holland College Transitions Class in two different planting days in September , and October.
The last few days BBEMA crew has been utilizing the drone to access past projects, as well plan future projects. It is a great time of year for doing so due to the winter foliage making it easier to access narrower sections of stream . It takes about 5 minutes with the drone , what would take about an hour of boots on the ground. Conducting winter field assessments on the Dunk River Estuary are so much more enjoyable on these cold winter days when using UAV (drone) technology ....
BBEMA staff took time out their busy to clean up trash that was unfortunately dumped on Walls Road.
yesterday was great weather for the BBEMA staff to finish up their yearly tree planting . Due to the summer hot temperatures a lot of the tees that were planed too be planted int the summer ,were put off to be planted in the fall. In hopes to give the trees the best chance for survival.
Have you checked your window wells? Today BBEMA staff rescued approx 40+ frogs that were trapped in the window well of a local building... During summer and fall, frogs and toads find their way into the window wells of houses. When a frog or toad encounters a wall, it travels along the wall, until it falls into a window well. Once there, it is generally trapped. The moist skin of a trapped frog or toad will dry out and the animal will die if it cannot get to an environment with high moisture this is especially an issue in the colder fall months. Frogs and toads can be rescued from deep window wells by hand (make sure to moisten your hands with water before picking up the frogs). Additionally, homeowners can install window well covers, or place a board or frog ladder into the window well so that the frogs can climb out.
happy to be partnering on this great new micro plastics monitoring initiative..
