All About Honeybees is for anyone interested in learning more about our fuzzy friends. While this course touches on the act of beekeeping, it is intended to provide a foundational understanding of honeybee evolution, biology, anatomy, society, casts, and seasonal changes. Participants may choose to take three additional classes to complete a beekeeping certificate.

Warre style top-quilt and IPM bottom board. . These two beecentric give components are inverted versions of each other. The IPM bottom board with insert allows beekeepers to perform a quick check for mites, while the quilt provides space above the bees to add extra insulation. When using straw or wood shavings, the quilt keeps the heat while allowing excess moisture to escape. . #yegbees #yegfood #beekeeping #beehive #bees #honeybees #yeggarden

What are these? These are experimental entrance/bottom board prototypes that I’ve been using on some of my hives this year. It’s a slatted rack with an integrated entrance designed to provide a buffer between the internal environment of the hive and the outside world. When placed on top of the existing Beecentric Hive bottom board and below the brood, it provides a ~3 air space below the brood. Providing a little distance between the brood and the entrance encourages ...the queen to lay to the bottom of the brood chamber. It’s also easy to defend and creates a space where the bees can hang out when it’s hot. While all of my existing hives were bearding on hot days, hives with the prototype design were nicely tucked inside. Where I hope the design shines is during winter, as the prototype should provide a buffer from driving winds, the 3 air space should prevent any dead bees from blocking the entrance and make it easy for them to take winter cleansing (poop) flights, and the inverted entry should act as a warm air trap - keeping warm air inside while still allowing for plenty of ventilation. . #yegbees #yeggarden #yegfood #beehive #beehivedesigns #beehivebuilding See more
Don't eat bees. They're spicy.
