Today we are thankful for those that fought and continue to fight for our freedom. Lest we forget.
Time to introduce you to another member of the BeefSmart Team! Dr. Matthew Walpole, Consulting Ruminant Nutritionist, BeefSmart Partner Eastern Canada Matt grew up in rural southwestern Ontario, always having an interest in the dairy production industry. He attended the University of Guelph where he attained a BSc and MSc from the Department of Animal and Poultry Science. During his time there he represented the University of Guelph at the Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge, and... taught introductory dairy nutrition to undergraduate students. He then moved west to the Department of Animal Science at the University of Saskatchewan, where he completed his PhD focusing on protein nutrition in feedlot and dairy cattle. He enjoys working with feedlot and dairy producers to maintain profitability while increasing production and environmental efficiencies. When he is not problem solving with clients, Matt is busy chasing after his young family or enjoying the outdoors hunting his hounds.
Is she eating enough? How can you tell the herd is eating enough mineral? You need to know: # of head, kg of mineral consumed, and # of days it took to consume it.... # of head x # of days = cow days Kg consumed/cow days = kg per head consumed = DAILY INTAKE! EXAMPLE: 100 cows x 5 days = 500 cow days 50 kg consumed / 500 cow days = 0.1 kg/head/day OR 100 gram/head/day #BalancedbyBeefSmart #ruminantnutrition #traceminerals #nutritionconsulting
Immunity is at top of mind right now as herds across the prairies start weaning calves. Stress and Nutrition are two key factors at weaning time to keep your calves healthy, ensure a good response to vaccination, and assist their transition onto feed. Here are a few tricks to try ease the weaning process this fall.... 1Offer grain or hay to the herd while the calves are alongside the cows a few times prior to weaning. This allows them to give the feed a try. They are more likely to get onto feed if they are familiar with the feedstuff. 2Try a lower stress weaning method if possible, such as fence line weaning or two stage weaning. 3Ensure the heard is consuming a high quality, properly balanced mineral on pasture leading up to weaning. A good mineral status will help elicit a better immune response to vaccinations. See more

Are you considering rejuvenating some old, tired pastures?
Such a good picture and description! Remember that milkline is your visual indicator that you may be close to proper silage timing, but a whole plant moisture is needed to confirm! Proper moisture at silage timing is so critical for good silage!
Putting up feed in wet conditions can be a struggle, and unfortunately spoilage can occur due to growth of undesirable molds and bacteria. This may lead to the production of mycotoxins which can limit animal performance. If you are concerned about molds and micotoxins, a feedtest is will be an important tool to help minimize risk. We would be happy to help you out! #balancedbybeefsmart #foragetesting #nutritionist

#DrPhil was busy this week doing trace mineral assessments on a mixed Brahman x Hereford herd for clients down in Aledo, Texas We love the opportunity to see different geographical areas. The primary grasses here in spring are annual ryegrass and Texas wintergrass. Summer perennials include Little Bluestem, Indian Grass, Switchgrass and Johnson Grass. #balancedbybeefsmart #nutrition #texasstyle #beef
Our website is up and rolling...and we are pretty happy about it!! Check us out at www.beefsmart.ca #balancedbybeefsmart #nutrition #cdnbeef
This group has had their trace mineral status assessed and now are ready for a mineral program tailored to their needs and environmental conditions Trace mineral availability can be altered in the rumen and animals may become toxic or deficient in certain trace minerals, which can impact productivity. A trace mineral assessment allows us to ensure mineral is fed at proper ratios and amounts for your herd, ensuring efficiency and a better bottom line. #balancedbybeefsmart #nutrition #grazing #forages #cdnbeef
We are looking forward to this event! Please stop by our booth and have a visit with one of our consultants!
