Have a decision to make about your birth? Are you feeling forced into giving an answer that doesn't feel like you actually get a choice? Use your B.R.A.I.N. B....R.A.I.N. is an acronym you can use at your advantage when you're at that 37 week appointment and your provider says "Let's check your cervix!" The problem with that last sentence is that you weren't given a choice or asked for consent. You don't even need to remove your clothes for this statement.This is your choice. No one else's. So what does it mean? Let's use that above scenario. 37 week appointment and your doctor says they'll check for dilation. B = Benefits. What are the benefits to checking dilation right now? R = Risks. What are the risks to checking dilation right now? A = Alternatives. What is the alternative option to checking my cervix? I = Instinct. What is my intuition saying? Is my instinct saying no? Or yes? N = Nothing. What if I say no and do nothing? These are smart tools you can use to say no or yes at your convenience. Remember that when we start to intervene in the process, we may invite unnecessary risks into our experiences. You are not full term at 37 weeks by the way. So if your doctor is using that outdated information, you may want to get clarification on their personal preferences for your birth. And then remember their preferences do not trump your right to autonomy, decision making and proper healthcare.
