TIPS TUESDAY Though many herbs slowly let the air out of a balloon rather than outright pop it, so to speak, there are many herbs that could (and should) be u...sed right away in first-aid situations. Arnica - good for bruising, especially when applied right away. Not for internal use whatsoever, do not use on open wounds. Homeopathic arnica is ingestible, not the actual herb. Black tea - the tannins help to stop bleeding. Apply to an actively bleeding wound to coagulate. Rip open tea bag or soak slightly and apply. Chamomile - as a warm compress to help remove particulate and infection from eyes. Watch out for/ask about allergies to the aster/daisy family, which are very common and would only aggravate the problem. Cayenne - as a styptic to stop bleeding. Can be applied directly to a bleeding wound, which does feel like it is burning, or mix 1 tsp with enough water to drink down and watch the bleeding slow and stop within a minute. Cottonwood - oil or salve made from cottonwood buds is great for strains, sprains, arthritis, bruising, and general pain. It does contain salicylic acid, a precursor to aspirin. If allergic to aspirin or any derivative should avoid this medicine. I have personally used each of these methods numerous times and is the only reason I am recommending. If you are at all worried about your injuries or illness, seek medical attention right away. As my herbal teacher taught me and I will teach you: if I get hit by a bus, call an ambulance, not a herbalist. But with herbs, I will heal much faster and much stronger than without. When an injury or illness happens outside of my realm of expertise, I have no problem seeking help from the conventional medical field and neither should you. Have you had to use any of these before?
