BeHealthy Superfood Diet 19.11.2020

Wellness in Motion gets underway Alberni Valley Times Tuesday, March 3, 2009 Quintin Winks Goal of program to reduce incidents of obesity, diabetes in Tseshaht First Nation Months of planning and preparation for the new Tseshaht Wellness in Motion program are finally being put into practice.... The program began last Thursday with a small launch party. For the next three months nineTseshaht staff members from the band’s administration offices will undergo a lifestyle makeover. The goal of the program is to reduce the incidents of obesity and diabetes in the Tseshaht First Nation. For now the pilot group will be staff member, but it’s hoped that eventually the program will be open to all members of the Tseshaht band. In the meantime, the nine participating staff members are learning first hand how to keep the program going once they assume full control of it. Program facilities are all housed in the new Tseshaht administration building. Sustainability is part of my mandate, said Karen Paquette, co-ordinator of the primary health care initiative. Paquette’s contract to bring the program to fruition is slated to end this year. So we’re training the trainers with experiences, she said. As part of the Wellness program, participating staff members will undergo physiotherapy and a regular exercise program. They’ll also learn how to manage stress and how to prepare nutritious meals designed to help combat disease. The diet helps reduce symptoms and isa big factor in preventing the disease from spreading further, Paquette said. Food is always combined with other lifestyle changes like exercise and stress management. Annie Watts, author of two cookbooks that incorporate traditional Tseshaht ingredients and locally available foods, has created a menu for the Wellness program’s participants. The diet includes foods that are low in saturated fats, sodium and other potentially harmful ingredients. It also includes foods that are traditional to the Tseshaht diet, like salmon and locallly available plants. Many of the recipes that will be shared are also availabe in Watts’ new book. The $25 cookbook won’’t released until fall, but Watts is thinking of calling it A First Nations Approach to Dieting. See more
