With spring on it's way and temperatures starting to improve you might start to notice some mould forming around windows, on the inside of cabinets and in other dark, damp, low-traffic areas. It's important to remember that mould needs 3 things to grow: moisture, a natural food source (cellulose) and time. Remove one of these things and mould will cease to exist! It's important to keep surfaces (especially dark, low-traffic areas) clean and clear of dust and debris. Clean win...dow sills (dust is composed of natural fibers - aka mould food), keep doorways clear of melting snow, and clean the inside of cabinets. Keeping these areas clean (free of natural debris) eliminates the food source that mould thrives on. During the spring our humidity can be very high - it's important to ensure that our indoor humidity stays relatively low - below 60% RH is ideal. With low humidity mould struggles to absorb the moisture it requires to grow. This can be accomplished by simply keeping surfaces dry. Be sure to check windows, doors, plumbing fixtures and pipes for slow leaks and condensation (cold pipes in humid areas), install dehumidifiers in rooms that stay humid and use your bathroom fan whenever needed. Ensure to keep up with regular cleaning and inspections of these areas and mould won't stand a chance!
