In 2013, the #2 Mine Tour and Museum held its first annual Remember Our Miners’ Day. The board and staff wanted to say THANK YOU to the community of Bell Island by giving back to our people in the form of a free day! Yesterday was the 5th Annual. We saw close to 350 people from 12 noon until a little after 4 pm. It rained but it went ahead without a hickup! The musicians came out in unprecedented numbers to play a few tunes for us. They were there from Kingston, Ontario, St.... John’s, Torbay and our wonderful music icons from our beautiful island! Thank you each and every one! Keith Pitts arrived in the bright and shiny red fire truck and spent the entire day with us! Thank you Keith and the Volunteer Wabana Fire Dept. not only for yesterday but for all you do! Corey Bickford from the Recreation Dept. of the Town of Wabana not only delivered the bouncy castle but set it up for us! Thank you Corey and the Town. This is our third year partnering with the Wabana Boys’ and Girls’ Club! Joey Somerton, his staff and students are simply phenomenal! Our site is so very grateful for all of the help and positive partnering we receive from this corner stone of our community! Thank you Joey and crew! I look forward to this continued liaison with you!! It was great to see the newest member of the RCMP, his lovely wife and children at our event! Thank you sir for taking the time to bring your family in to meet us! It is during this event that the board gets an opportunity to be boots on deck! Thank you so much to our board members and spouses who joined with us yesterday to help ensure the success of the day! Miner Tom was there to provide cart rides and even some big children (like me)enjoyed the ride! Thank you to the Bakery for the tasty and beautifully decorated commemorative cake. Thank you to Clover Farms who provided and delivered the food! Thank you to the our amazing tour staff, student staff and volunteer staff who came in, even on their day off, to give a helping hand. We even had a former tour guide drop in to help out. Our staff are our heart and soul. We are grateful for everything they do and have done ensure our success every day! Last but by no means least thank you to the people of Bell Island and beyond who came by to enjoy our annual event! It is people like you who give us the ability to succeed and grow!! Thank you sincerely!! Looking forward to seeing you at Christmas at the Mines on August 15th!! Please share our COMMUNITY THANK YOU!!! See more

Shared from Kay Coxworthy! September 5,1942 - a day that stands forever in the history of Bell Island, for on this day 75 years ago the guns of war shattered the peace of a sunny summer day, leaving two ore carriers at the bottom of the Atlantic off Lance Cove and 29 sailors lost. The Saganaga and the Lord Strathcona went to the bottom that day, victims of enemy torpedoes. Another two ships and 41 sailors would be lost on in the darkness of November 2 of that year when the PL...M and the Rosecastle were torpedoed. The youngest man lost in these attacks was 17-year old Hubert "Billy" Swain of Grimsby, England who was lost when the Saganaga went down. A ceremony is planned for Saturday, September 16 to commemorate these tragic events, and today I will lay flowers on the grave of Billy Swain at our Anglican Cemetery to remember a young life lost in war, on behalf of his twin sister Alice Hallam whom I had the pleasure of meeting in 1994 when, as President of Branch 18 of the Roya Canadian Legion, I had the honor of standing with Alice and Richard Hallam and survivor Gordon Hardy as the Lance Cove Memorial was officially opened. For those reading this today, I ask only that you take a moment to offer a small prayer for the 70 souls lost in these wartime attacks off the shores of Bell Island.. . See more
