Our Birth Story Baby Nina Jean Capowski is here and she comes with quite the story! What can I say other than: Are you surprised considering our past 10 months? The story beings on April 30th at 12:55 am. I woke up feeling nauseous which was nothing out of the ordinary, I spent the previous 9 months feeling nauseous. After getting sick, I had my first contraction lasting one minute. "Okay, here we go", I thought to myself. I went back to bed and told David we needed to star...t timing my contractions. 6 mins later another contraction and an intense urge to push. I thought to myself, "Hm, interesting, wasn't expecting that so soon". 4 minutes later another contraction. 2 min later another. At that point, I told David we needed to get to the hospital ASAP - this was happening! He ran to wake up Carter and I ran to the washroom to be sick again. Just then my water broke and I had an intense, uncontrollable urge to push. Baby was crowning! I screamed for David. It was the loudest scream I could've mustered - it shocked me and I know now that it came from a place of fear and excitement, fueled by an insane amount of adrenaline. David knew something was wrong and ran up the stairs at record speed. Call 911 this baby is coming!, I yelled. Just then another contraction, push, and baby was out! Right there in my master bathroom! Shock, power, strength and fear are just some of the overwhelming emotions that rushed over my body. We could not believe what had just happened. Nina Jean had entered the world like a hurricane. She took us by surprise but our immediate love for her was no surprise at all. We had wanted this baby so badly and faced many obstacles along the way, but there she was in all her glory. Minutes later the paramedics arrived and took over. We were transported to the hospital by ambulance, underwent Covid-screening and were admitted to the maternity ward for 36 hours of observation. The experience took about 5 years off David's life, but other than that we are all safe and doing well at home!

This is me. This is what thyroid cancer looks like. My journey started about four months ago when I noticed a small lump on the right side of my neck. I booked an appointment with my doctor, and was referred for tests that would take months to schedule. I had a gut feeling something was wrong and felt that I needed to be assessed right away. After two visits to emergency and having to follow-up several times, I finally got a rushed referral to an ENT. I am so happy I listened... to my gut and advocated for myself. After some testing and a biopsy, I was told I have Thyroid Cancer and, although relatively uncommon, it had metastasized to my lymph nodes. The news that I would require surgery as soon as possible came as a huge shock given that many doctors had told me the lump was likely a cyst. On November 21, 2019, I will be going in for a full thyroidectomy and neck dissection to remove my cancerous thyroid and lymph nodes. Saying I’m nervous would be an understatement. The thought of being strapped to a table with a tube down my throat makes me weak in the knees. I have never been under general anesthetic, and although I’m told the surgery will only feel like a second, it is extremely frightening to think that I will be in the operating room for 8-9 hours. I am trying to take things one day at a time. First surgery, then radiation, then learning to live life without a thyroid and understanding/controlling medications. The next year will be full of ups and downs, but I will be surrounded by people who love and support me: family, friends and clients. Cancer is all around us; I don’t know anyone who isn’t effected some way or another. Having it look me in the eyes and having the strength to stare back at it has given me a sense of empowerment that will no doubt guide me through this journey.
