A question from one of our community members. Does anyone have any information for our member? Hello . I’m wondering if there’s a way to find day homes in the neighbourhood that transport to and from St. Benedict School?

If you are a parent of a Grade One student and he/she did not receive an Arbor Day seedling at school this year, you can still get one to mark this celebration. Please email [email protected] to get the times and locations for a pick-up. Happy planting!

This is the first Canada Day in 7 years that I won’t get to be at the Legislature cooking pancakes for the 10,000+ people who attend The Ismaili Edmonton Annual... Pancake Breakfast. There won’t be a Canada Day event for families at the Belmead Community League this year. The Fusion Church Canada Day BBQ isn’t happening. The Somali Independence Day/Canada Day BBQ hosted by Somali Canadian Education and Rural Development Organization is cancelled. And the Westend Seniors Activity Centre isn’t able to bring our seniors together to celebrate. Those are just a few of the regular Canada Day events that I attend almost every year that won’t be happening this year. What I love about all of these different events is how inclusive they are. So while we won’t be together like we normally would, don’t forget that the reason these events are so inclusive is because almost every community knows that diversity is our strength. I encourage you remember that this Canada Day and I look forward to being together again soon. Happy Canada Day!

Hi everyone. I posted an update two weeks ago about the reductions in services that we would see over the coming year because of the financial impact of COVID-1...9. As we had to address an over $140 million shortfall, and it's possible that number may grow, we had to make changes to almost every program and service in the city. One of those changes was the maintenance of our greenspace. In a normal year, the goal is to cut approximately every 7 days. Since we were unable to hire any temporary summer staff and there were additional temporary layoffs, the park maintenance team is much smaller. That reduction in the workforce means that we are cutting approximately every 21 days. Premier parks and sports fields will generally still be mowed to regular standards. I wanted to share that again because I am getting a lot of calls and emails now because understandably, our parks don't look great. That can be quite frustrating for many people. With such a significant budget shortfall, we wanted to ensure that key infrastructure maintenance (ex: roads, buildings, bridges, etc.) would be maintained at the same levels as before because not doing that could impact the life of the infrastructure. This is far from ideal but I wanted to reshare this information since more people have been reaching out. I know there have been community residents who have actually stepped up to fill the gap which does not surprise me because that's what people have been doing since the pandemic started. I expect that the maintenance will be back to normal next year but this year, things won't look quite as nice. I'll share a link in the comments below if you want to see a list of all the impacted programs and services. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thanks everyone. Hi everyone. Effective May 22nd the following amenities will start opening for public use: Playgrounds and outdoor fitness parks. Outdoor courts (ex: tennis, pi...ckleball, basketball, etc.) and courses. Outdoor skateparks. While tomorrow is the opening day, there are many parks and courts across the city so they will not all be opened at the same time. To be clear, playgrounds across the city will all be available for use but the tape that has been put around them may not all come down at the same time. City staff will work as hard as they can to formally reopen them as quickly and safely as possible. Restrictions will be in effect and those specific details will be made available later today. I will post that information in this thread once it is available. Update: Provincial health orders are still in place and you should still be following the Alberta Health guidelines as the City of Edmonton is treating those as rules - not guidelines. Signage is required to be put up at each location and the city will be doing that over the coming days. I'll post a link to the provincial guidelines in the comments below but I need to reinforce that the City of Edmonton will be treating them as rules, not guidelines. Thanks everyone for your patience and get ready to safely enjoy those outdoor amenities. But please don't forget, this pandemic is not over, we still have to be diligent or else restrictions could be reintroduced. cc Ward 1 Communities: Crestwood Community League Parkview Community League Crestwood, Parkview, Laurier, Glenora, Grovenor & McQueen Communities Group Jasper Park Community League West Jasper Place Community Canora Community League High Park Community Mayfield Community League Britannia Youngstown Community League Glenwood Community League Meadowlark Community League West Meadowlark Community League La Perle, Terra Losa, Belmead, Aldergrove, Thorncliff, Summerlea Group Summerlea Community League Terra Losa, Edmonton LaPerle Community League Belmead Community League Aldergrove Community League Lewis Estates Community League Edmonton Rosenthal Community League Secord Community League Westview Village Community Association Big Lake Community League General Talk - Communities of Big Lake (Hawks Ridge, Starling, Trumpeter)

Belmead Community League 21.04.2020

Hi everyone. I've had a few people asking about the status of playgrounds and our courts (ex: basketball, tennis, pickleball) and I thought I would provide a qu...ick update. The provincial announcement yesterday that playgrounds and outdoor courts could open up was a positive announcement. But with no advance notice and clear protocol regarding things like cleaning, City of Edmonton staff need a few days to review what was announced. An example of where we need clarification is that the provincial government website asks the following on the "Guidance on outdoor activities": "2. Does the activity involve contact with frequently touched surfaces or objects? COVID-19 can be transmitted by touching objects or surfaces the virus has landed on then touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Activities that carry this risk are not recommended, even with physical distancing in place, including: communal meals: backyard barbecues, drinks with friends and neighbours, picnics and other gatherings activities that use shared equipment, such as horseshoes and bocce ball" Unless we are supposed to be cleaning every playground after each child goes down a slide or uses a swing, there seems to be a bit of a discrepancy between what is listed on their site and what they announced yesterday. The same can be said about some of our outdoor courts. Unless players are bringing 100 tennis balls so that they don't have to touch a ball that another player has touched, that again creates a disconnect between what was said yesterday and what is written on their site. What city staff have said is that they need the next week to review everything that was announced, engage Alberta Health for clear protocols to ensure we are complying with the Public Health Order, and then they will provide an update to city council on May 21st at our next Emergency Advisory Committee meeting. If we get the necessary information from Alberta Health, it could be possible that amenities like playgrounds, outdoor courts, etc. reopen very soon after that update. I know people are eager to have these amenities reopen. As you can imagine, since our city staff and city council are not medical experts, having a clear plan from Alberta Health is needed to be confident when we reopen different amenities. If there is new information prior to our update next week, I will be certain to share it here. I hope that as we move into additional phases of reopening, the City of Edmonton and all municipalities are able to receive some advance notice so that we can ask the necessary questions of Alberta Health in order to relaunch at the same time as the province announces it. We’ve heard from Edmontonians about an increase in personal protective equipment (PPE) litter, including discarded gloves, in grocery store parking lots. To he...lp, we’re distributing Capital City Clean Up Litter Kits to grocery stores across the city. We encourage you to do your part to keep Edmonton safe and clean. Please place your litter, including PPE items, in the trash. And a huge thank you to these businesses and their staff for continuing to provide us with essential services during this time.
