How do you care for your child’s teeth? Start cleaning your baby’s mouth before they have teeth. Use a baby toothbrush or a soft, clean, damp cloth or gauze to gently wipe their gums. Don’t use toothpaste until their teeth emerge. Begin brushing when they have four teeth. Use a child-sized toothbrush with soft bristles and a small amount of toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice. Gently brush their teeth in circles for two minutes.... At three years old, children can start brushing their own teeth with help. Use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Make sure they spit out any toothpaste and saliva after they finish brushing. Children are usually ready to begin brushing their own teeth at age six. It helps to use a timer to let them know how long they need to keep brushing.

A properly fitted sports guard can protect your teeth from serious injuries, but unfortunately, not everyone understands the difference between a custom sports guard from a dentist and a boil-and-bite variety from a drugstore. A custom sports guard is made to fit your teeth exactly, cushioning them comfortably and protecting them from impact. Because boil-and-bite sports guards are made with thinner materials and don’t fit snugly to the teeth, they leave athletes more expos...ed to potential injuries. There’s no question in this comparison custom sports guards will win every time! Give us a call if you’re curious about the process or would like to have one made.

Did you know that a vegetarian diet can affect your teeth? Vegetarians need to be careful to consume enough calcium and vitamin D or they’re at increased risk of tooth decay or periodontal disease. Eating the right amounts of fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes can help vegetarians get the nutrients they need.

For big kids, teens, and adults, avoid using as much toothpaste as you see in an ad! Too much foam can trigger you to stop brushing before the two minutes are up since you’ll need to spit sooner. Toothpaste the size of a pea should be sufficient to get enough foam to thoroughly clean your mouth.

Sensitive teeth can be uncomfortable, but there are things you can do to help. Let’s start by looking at what causes sensitive teeth

It’s hard for children to brush and floss their very back teeth, making their molars prone to decay. Dental sealants are a thin protective layer that can reduce their risk of decay by nearly 80% in molars. They’re best applied as soon as those back teeth erupt, and it’s a quick procedure here at the office. Think of them as raincoats for a child’s teeth! ;)

Flossing can be tricky with orthodontics. It can rip or stretch on metal brackets and bands, and it can be difficult to thread under the wires and appliances. Luckily, there is specialty floss designed for people with orthodontics. There is extra-strong floss that won’t break going around a bracket, floss threaders that have a stiff end for slipping through narrow areas, and even spongy expanding floss for cleaning around appliances.

Children’s permanent teeth grow in with three little bumps on the tooth called mamelons. These are normal and wear down over time, which is why most adults don’t have these bumps. Feel free to ask us questions about mamelons or tooth development at your next appointment.

Do you know what to do if you accidentally lose a tooth? It's important to act quickly. Pick it up carefully and hold it by the top of the tooth not the root and store it in a container of milk, and if you don’t have milk, use saliva or water. Don’t rinse the tooth or let it dry out. Call us right away for further instructions. (778) 265-5075

Palatal expanders can be used while children are still growing to help widen the upper jaw. Widening the upper jaw can make room for adult teeth, reduce overcrowding, and correct a crossbite. A palatal expander can improve breathing by opening the oral and nasal passages and allowing the patient to breathe through the nose. If your child is aged 7-10, ask us about this and other early orthodontic treatments! (778) 265-5075

Dental checkups are an essential part of maintaining good oral health. First, we remove stains and build-up on teeth above and below the gumline. Then we look for signs of tooth decay and gum disease, check the bite and jaw for problems, evaluate any new risk factors such as a change in medication, conduct an oral cancer screening, assess problem areas, and make recommendations for further treatment. Sometimes this involves taking a closer look with a dental X-ray. We also demonstrate proper cleaning techniques or provide tips to help patients reach any problem areas when brushing and flossing at home. Call us today to book a dental checkup (778) 265-5075!
