In Flanders Fields the Poppies Blow... As we prepare for Remembrance day, we think of poppies. The red poppy, a native plant along much of the Western Front during the First World War, has become a powerful symbol of remembrance. It is the principal emblem of the Royal Canadian Legion, which distributes several million each year to be worn by Canadians on Remembrance Day. Guinness World Records Turns 65: 5 Older Record-Setters Who Prove That Age Is No Barrier to Greatness As the story goes, in 1954, the recollection of an argument about which is the fastest game bird in the world and the inability to find the answer in any book led Guinness Brewery Managing Director Sir Hugh Beaver to conceive of a book that would contain all sorts of facts to help settle pub debates. And with that, the seeds of the Guinness Book of World Records were plan...ted. A year later, on August 27, 1955, the first English edition rolled off the presses and proved a bestseller requiring four reprints within the year as readers snatched up nearly 200,000 copies. Sixty-five years on, the Guinness Book of World Records, now simply called Guinness World Records, is synonymous with amazing feats that leave readers asking Howd they do that? as well as strange milestones that have readers questioning Why would they do that? (see, for example, the record for Most Apples Held in Own Mouth and Cut by Chainsaw in One Minute) But Guinness world records also have the ability to inspire by illustrating the sheer abilities that humans possess to overcome perceived obstacles like, for example, societal limitations imposed on us merely because of our age. So to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Guinness World Records, were revisiting five record-breakers who proved that age is no barrier to greatness. www.everythingzoomer.com//guinness-world-records-turns-65/

Playgrounds For The Elderly Boost Activity And Decrease Loneliness Someone recently came up with the idea to build playgrounds for the elderly, and we think this is just such a wonderful idea! Its normal that as you grow older, you grow a lot more sedentary and a lot more lonely. For years, playgrounds have been primarily for children and teens to enjoy for daily activity. Now, seniors can enjoy the same benefits of playing on a playground. Of course, most senior citizens ca...nt jump around, run, and hang on the monkey bars. However, these senior-specific playgrounds have low-impact equipment that helps them to remain active and improve their balance! They can also enjoy using exercise bikes, cross-trainers, flex runners, sit-up benches and other pieces. Learn more at https://blog.thealzheimerssite.greatergood.com/dyr-elderly/

Assistive technologies: Its not for me, Im not there yet! The World Health Organization predicts that by 2050, the number of people aged 60 and over will reach two billion.(1) Many of them will experience physical and cognitive changes associated with aging: vision loss, hearing, memory, strength and mobility. To reduce limitations or improve physical and cognitive functions, it is possible to use what are called "assistive technologies". For example, walkers, canes, motori...zed scooters, hearing aids, and wheelchairs allow people with disabilities to stay active and mobile in the community. Likewise, smartphones and tablets can be used to support people with dementia, providing them with reminders, storing information and keeping track of events. Despite the potential benefits and unmet needs for assistive technologies, some older adults remain reluctant to use them. Some even say that "it is not for me, I am not there yet" ... What can explain this reluctance? Learn more at www.mcmasteroptimalaging.org//assistive-technologies-it-s-

The importance of a will, particularly during a pandemic As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many families have had to make difficult decisions around their loved ones end of life wishes, particularly if those wishes werent clearly communicated beforehand, either to family members or through a will. Conversations around money can get emotional for many Canadians, which is why its typically not a hot topic among family members. According to the Discomfort Index, a Leger s...urvey of more than 1,500 Canadians commissioned by FP Canada in January 2020, only 33% said they feel very comfortable discussing money. How Music Therapy Is Making a Difference for Patients in Palliative Care If you ask Chrissy Pearson how music can make a difference in a persons life, she might tell you about the difference it made in someones death. Pearson, a certified music therapist with the Canadian Music Therapy Fund in Toronto, has experience working in a variety of settings, including palliative care. One day, she appeared in the doorway of a palliative care room where the patient took one look at ...Pearson with her guitar and her bag of handheld instruments and shook her head. I dont want someone playing music in my room, she said. Im not a musical person. But Pearson stayed and chatted a while and came to learn the woman did like music, mostly pop songs from the 1970s. Did you know? The Bennett Centre Long Term Care is named for Ballinafad residents Stewart and Lettie Bennett, past owners of Scotsdale farm, north of Georgetown on Trafalgar Road. Stewart Bennett was President of Beardmore Tannery in Acton, Vice President of Canada Packers, and President of the Royal Winter Fair.... Following a stroke in 1978, Stewart was impressed with the attention he received at Georgetown Hospital. Lettie, who drove to his bedside daily for weeks, said she came to think of the hospital's wonderful staff as "family." Shortly after the Bennetts died within weeks of each other in 1982, delighted hospital officials learned of their generous bequest of $1,335,000. Concerned that Seniors had to travel outside the community for long term care, funds from the bequest were designated to address their needs. The Bennett Centre became independent of the hospital in 1998, but the tradition of family-like care continues.

Good Vibrations: Could Doctors Prescribe Music Like a Drug? At 94, my father has a new woman in his life. Shes a tiny thing and needs Wi-Fi to function, so my mother is okay with it. The Future of Aging According to 11 Canadian Experts What kinds of exercise can help us age well? Does ethnicity play a role in how we age? How are Canadians dealing with aging and sex? These are important questions. The older cohort the baby boomers and gen-Xers represent nearly 45 per cent of Canadas population, or 16,753,198 people. By 2030, Statistics Canada estimates it will be 46.5 per cent, or 19,461,400 people. The World Health Organizations 10 Priorities for a ...Decade of Action on Healthy Ageing makes it clear that an effective plan requires better global data. As the WHO states, What gets measured gets done. Canadian researchers are stepping up. That includes scientists working on the most comprehensive study of aging in the world, led by investigators at McMaster, McGill and Dalhousie universities. Its called the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) and it has been amassing reams of data on more than 50,000 older adults since 2010, when researchers began collecting information on the lives of participants between the ages of 45 and 85.
