Local Beaverton business owner Ben Smith named Honorary Chair of the Sky Woman Project. Ben Smith, owner of Ben’s Pharmacy in Beaverton, has been named Honorary Chair of the Sky Woman Project, a unique sculpture that will be constructed in the next year to enhance the Beaverton Harbour. This distinctive and evocative work of art made by world renowned local artist Ron Baird will be a prominent landmark at the Beaverton Harbour and a legacy for generations to come. Mr. Smith ...opened his Beaverton store in 1987 and has been a pillar of the community. As a longtime supporter of community events and local youth, Mr. Smith received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013, as well as the Canada 150 Medal last year, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the community. The community has supported me over the years and I’ll continue to support them, he said. In light of his support of the community of Beaverton, Mr. Smith was the perfect choice for the position of Honorary Chair of the Sky Woman Project. I am proud of the Beaverton community coming together to restore our Historic waterfront through the Sky Woman Project and I feel very privileged to be the Honorary Chair of this wonderful and very meaningful project, he noted. The Sky Woman sculpture will help draw attention to the Beaverton Harbour and to Lake Simcoe with the hope of raising awareness for the protection of our natural resources; in this sense, the goal of the project is that the awareness it generates transforms into encouragement and action to support the many endeavours that protect this important water source. Based on several First Nations stories, the Sky Woman is represented by a beautiful stainless steel sculpture nearly four stories high and is designed to move in the wind and reflect sunlight. The sculpture will be located on the north spit of the Beaverton Harbour and will be a beacon for boaters and will help attract tourists to the area. Ron Baird, resident of Beaverton and internationally renowned sculptor, is gifting the creation and design for Sky Woman to the community. I am proud of our residents and Ron in particular, in giving back to the community. Public art stimulates dialogue, celebration, and community pride said Mr. Smith. A model of the Sky Woman sculpture will be in the storefront window of Ben’s Pharmacy in Beaverton leading up to and during the Beaverton Winter Carnival taking place February 3. I am hoping that everyone will stop by and check it out and support this important community project said Mr. Smith. See more
