This morning, the Prime Minister announced the Federal Temporary Wage Subsidy will be increased from 10% to 75% and the government will guarantee small business loans up to $40,000. That's really exciting news for our economy, and we're hopeful it will help our clients get through this difficult time. The government is expected to release more details on Monday, we plan on providing information as we understand to our clients at that time.

We are providing some recent tax related developments surrounding the COVID-19 situation. Our office is now fully closed to the public; therefore, all communications will need to occur via email or over the phone and all tax packages must be sent electronically. You may still drop off your physical documents in person through our mail slot. If your documents will not fit through our mailbox, please schedule a time with the partner handling your file to drop them off. The gov...ernment of Canada has offered some relief for individuals and businesses affected by COVID-19, including the extension of the personal income tax filing deadline to June 1, 2020. If you expect to receive benefits under the GSTC or the Canada Child Benefit, we recommend personal income tax returns to be filed by April 30, 2020 to avoid delay in receipt of any benefits in 2020. Additionally, any income tax balances owing and scheduled income tax instalment payments that become payable after March 18, 2020 will now be due to be paid by August 31, 2020. As of this time, the extension only applies to income taxes. Therefore, any balances owing and instalments for GST/HST, payroll source deductions, or other taxes are still due to be paid at the regular deadlines. **Important If you have provided us with any postdated cheques for income tax instalment payments to remit on your behalf, please let us know if you would like us to hold off on submitting them to CRA. You will not incur any interest on late payment of income tax instalments until August 31, 2020 if you defer the payments. Afterwards, interest will begin to accrue on the total of your deferred payments. The government is also providing a wage subsidy available equal to 10% of wages paid for a limited time to a maximum of $25,000. This subsidy is claimed as a reduction from your regular payroll remittances. We expect more details will be provided by CRA once this process is finalized.
