JAN 8/18 "Local computer business clicks past 25 years" by Daniel Bushman From the days of MS-DOS and the myriad of Windows programs to the ever evolving advancement in technology... today, Bergen Computers in Watrous has experienced it all. Marking 25 years a few months ago, owner Gary Bergen has not only been fixing and selling computers but keeping up with each wave of technology. Officially taking over the computer business from Bryan Doig in October 1992, Bergen began selling XT, 286 and 386 computers with MS-DOS installed. From there he began supplying computers and IT work to the local school division and Carlton Trail College in Watrous and Humboldt. Gary also provided instruction at Carlton Trail College, especially when the Internet came in 1995. But it was earlier than that when Bergen got the bug for computers. Early in the 1970s, I worked on a Bachelor of Science and took courses in Computer Science, working on mainframe systems, said Gary. While Bergen took a break from computers, going to school in California for two Masters degrees and marrying his wife Kathy in 1977, he rebooted his passion for computers while pastoring at the Watrous Baptist Church for 22 years. We came to Watrous in 1984 and I was the pastor of the Baptist Church. Six years later, I began writing computer programs in 1990 in the C programming language and wrote a number of programs including the GradeMaker Program for keeping students marks in Saskatchewan schools including Winston High School in Watrous, and a program for Video Stop to keep track of movies and sales which Earl Hayhurst still uses today. Riding the cyberwave of computer technology in the late 1990s, Bergen kept up with the technology and after retiring as pastor of the Baptist Church, expanded on his work with computers. I have seen many changes in the business from MSDOS to the different versions of Windows (some disasters like Windows Millennium and Windows 8!). The computers have just kept getting better and better and smaller and smaller, and now of course we service a lot of phones and tablets, Apple iPhones and iPads. We have also produced and maintain over 40 websites, and have also diversified and do graphics work and video editing. With technology consuming todays day and age, Bergen has been kept busy with the changes and hopes to keep working away at it for many years to come. Its far too interesting to quit, and were having way too much fun! Thank you to all our faithful customers over the years and to all the people of Watrous and area for their support - its a great place to live and work!

Fantastic news! The CRTC has declared High Speed Internet a basic and essential service for all Canadians, with a target for download speed of 50 Mbps! To put this in perspective, Watrous is at 5 Mbps for Basic high speed, and rural areas are generally much less than that. In a ruling handed down Wednesday, the national regulator ordered the countrys internet providers to begin working toward boosting internet service and speeds in rural and isolated areas.
