The below-zero temps have caused the ice to form at Pomquet Cove. As I walked along the frozen shore at sunset, the sounds of ice snapping and cracking as it moved was startling. In this area there was still an open channel meandering along, but further out there were people fishing smelts through the ice already. The post-sundown blue hour highlighted the textures and colours in the water and ice. A beautiful calm evening. Share if you like!

When the wind has been high from the south east all night, and you find a willing accomplice, a trip to Tor Bay, NS is in order. We lucked out when the sun tried to break through the cloud, producing a most magical lighting situation. The sound of the breakers crashing onto rocks and rolling up the beach was mesmerizing. Hard to pull away when every wave seems more spectacular than the last. Share if you like!

Full moon prowling during the blue hour this evening at Big Island, NS The sky was very moody, indicating the rain in the forecast is not far away. A gentle breeze created lapping waves in rhythmic patterns near the shore. Share if you like.

Caught some lovely light at Ferry Beach late this afternoon. Nice to be still walking on the beaches in Nova Scotia on November 29th! Share if you like!

The ever-beautiful James River Falls. We took a circuitous route to and from these falls on Brown's Mountain this afternoon. The first route goes along a lower swampier area and you need to cross the river on a narrow piece of metal serving as a foot bridge. The route we took out was higher, steeper and comes out much further up the mountain - at the spring by the Brown's Mountain Springers sign. It was quite the trek back to our vehicle from there along the road (my feet and hips say more than five kilometers with a few steep hills). Neither route is difficult compared to the steep decent to the bottom of the falls with camera gear and heavy tripod, holding onto ropes and roots. The reward, however, is priceless. This 16 x 24 canvas print is on it’s way to Ontario this week! Canvases make an ideal Christmas gift for folks who couldn’t get home this year - easy to ship and ready to hang. Check out the photos on my page. Message me for details.

ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) is achieved by using slow shutter speeds together with camera movement (vertical, horizontal, etc) to render a scene into a dreamy abstract image. The ability to identify subjects/scenes that work well with it is an art in itself. Yesterday I found inspiration at Gaspereau Lake, and along the Ohio Valley area of Antigonish County. Overcast days with soft light produce more subtle images. Share if you like.

Got my feet wet in Cape Breton this morning! The water below Egypt Falls, was (surprisingly)not overly cold. After being pretty dry all summer, the falls are now full from side to side The water in the foreground is running over the tall grasses that grew during the dry spell - giving it golden undertones. There are now stairs to the right of the original path making it a BIT easier footing near the bottom of the hill. Go early to avoid the crowds, and while the sun is still behind the treeline at the top of the hill. Share if you like!

Fall equinox is upon us and #hurricaneteddy is heading our way, but it was certainly the calm before the storm this evening at South Side Harbour, NS. Not too sure about the "red sky at night - sailors delight" saying though - I doubt there will be any sailors heading out around these parts for the next 48 hours. Stay safe in the Maritimes and share if you like!

Although it appears more like a moon, this is the SUN rising this morning in my backyard in Antigonish, NS. Thousands of kilometers away on the west coast, fires are destroying forests, property and lives. High altitude smoke, carried east with the jet stream, is filtering the strong rays of the sun which renders it a pink orb in the sky. People in California, Oregon and Washington states cannot even open their windows due to the extremely bad air quality. As bad as 2020 is, we can still go outside and BREATHE here on the east coast. The trees on the horizon seem to point towards the sun as if to say "Look! Look! See what is happening!" Share if you like.
