Bernie's Buddies

Today is Children's Grief Awareness Day. This annual day of international recognition was started by Highmark Caring Place in 2008 to highlight the needs of grieving children who have had a significant person in their lives die. In addition to an extensive schedule of online events in honour of today's anniversary, they offer amazing resources that caregivers can use to support children and youth who are experiencing grief. Their youtube videos for activities are especially helpful if you're looking for ideas to do with kids or youth in your care. Bernie's Buddies will restart in-person workshops just as soon as it is appropriate and safe. In the meantime, we continue our mission online to build community, raise awareness, and add capacity to resource alternatives for our grieving children and youth.

Children's Grief Awareness Day is coming up next Thursday November 19, promoting awareness of the importance of childhood bereavement support resources. Grieving children and youth often explore emotions more readily through creative activities. At Bernie's Buddies, we use this approach as one of our three workshop components to encourage sharing of their experiences. Parents and caregivers can also do arts and crafts at home with grieving children in their care to help provide an environment of safe expression.
