REMEMBRANCE DAY 2020 This Wednesday, November 11th is Remembrance Day. On Wednesday, our City of Kitchener community will join Canadians from coast to coast to coast to pause in appreciation of all those who served in various wars and peacekeeping missions and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms and democracy we all enjoy today... . On Remembrance Day we annually honour the men and women who fought and paid the price for all of us as Canadians - past, present and future. Remembrance Day 2020 is particularly important as it also marks 75 years since the end of the last of the Great Wars - World War II. We remember the strength and courage of their plight during dark times, that ultimately led to the brighter days we enjoy today. These heroes exemplified the character and qualities Canadians are known for today. Compassion. Kindness. Bravery. They give us hope for an even brighter future, for both Canada and our world, built upon peace, love and mutual understanding. This year, due to Covid-19, the cenotaph ceremony is limited to a small group of people to stay in line with provincial public health requirements. However, you are invited to watch the livestream thanks to our local television station, CTV Kitchener. You can watch the stream beginning at 10:45am at www.kitchener.ctvnews.ca and still join our community as we pause, wherever we are, at 11am for 2 minutes of silence. This year is also proving more challenging for our veterans to sell poppies and raise much needed dollars for the KW Poppy Fund, which supports our veterans and their families. Please wear a poppy this week and If you are able, please make a donation at: www.kwpoppyfund.ca. To veterans in Kitchener and throughout Waterloo Region who served on behalf of our community -- we thank you, and we salute you. We are forever indebted to you for the precious gift of freedom we all enjoy today. We owe you, our honour, gratitude and respect. Lest We Forget. cc: Scott Davey, @Dave Schnider, John Gazzola, Christine Michaud, Councillor Kelly Galloway-Sealock, Paul Singh, Bill Ioannidis, Margaret Johnston, Deb Chapman, @Sarah Marsh, The Royal Canadian Legion - National Headquarters

HOWIE MEEKER (1923-2020) #RIP A sad loss for #Canada & hockey today, as City of Kitchener native, oldest living Toronto Maple Leafs alum & former Member of Parliament, Howie Meeker died today at 97. Howie was a winner of 4 Stanley Cups & a beloved sportscaster with many people of my generation growing up to his presence on Hockey Night in Canada. In 2011, he received the Order of Canada from former Governor-General, David Johnston. He certainly was the last of the hockey gr...eats from that generation. On behalf of the Council & the Citizens of the City of Kitchener, my sympathies to his extended family, friends & hockey colleagues! RIP, Howie.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN 2020 #HappyHalloween2020, City of Kitchener! The safest way to participate this year is with your immediate family & enjoying #HalloweenAtHome .... You can find many ideas at http://kitchener.ca/halloween including pumpkin carving, virtual costume party & #Halloween movie nights. Looking to get out & enjoy Halloween safely - head Downtown for the #Halloween2020 Art Walk & Scavenger Hunt from 1-5pm, starting on Gaukel btwn Joseph & Charles. Or visit our community centres btwn Noon & 6pm for a haunted display photo. Info at http://kitchener.ca/halloween If you do go to these events, pls only go if you're symptom free, limit close contact to only people in your own household, maintain at least 2m physical distancing with others, wear a mask at all times, and remember to wash your hands thoroughly when you get home. While celebrating in the above ways is recommended, and the safest of alternatives in this challenging year, if you choose to go out trick or treating, or plan to hand out candy, keep the following in mind...... - Only go out with members of your immediate household. - Only trick-or-treat in your neighbourhood and avoid traveling to other neighbourhoods. - Physically distance and wear a face covering with anyone outside of your immediate household. - Both trick-or-treaters and people handing out candy should wear a face covering. Not a costume mask. - A costume mask is not a substitute for a face covering and should not be worn over a face covering as it may make it difficult to breathe. - Do not leave treats in a bucket or bowl for children to grab. - Use tongs, or other similar tools, to hand out treats. - Do not congregate or linger at doorsteps. Line up two metres apart if waiting.

Please remember to show kindness and patience for others during the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether it’s the frontline workers, business owners, staff running COVID-19 testing centres, community members & more. Let’s show others how much of a caring & compassionate community Kitchener is.
